Savage Action for Custom Build
Hey guys,
I'm currently building a 280 AI off my old Remington M700. Just waiting on my proof barrel (thinking I might be waiting a lot longer now).
While I was killing time this a.m. I came across a couple of videos on custom Savage rifles. Seems like it's a whole lot easier to install a pre fit savage barrel without having to use a gunsmith or a lathe to set the headspace correctly like the M700.
Anyone have experience using a savage action for a custom build?
I'll be using Henry Rempel for my M700. I've heard lots of great things about him and I'm really excited to get the build started. I'm just asking more out of curiosity because you can pick up a 10/110 or a 11/111 for fairly cheap.
Thanks

Personally, I have no experience one way or the other. It may be a bit cheaper with the Savage but if you're doing a custom, you might as well get the TLC on the action as well. That would be pretty much the same price I would expect. Barrel mounting would probably be a bit cheaper as I would expect there to be a little less lathe time.
Savage actions seem to be becoming quite popular. I am a 700 guy but I have been toying with the idea of others lately as well, Savage being at the top.

Fun project: Go for it!
I bought a used Savage in 243 for $250 and used the action to build my son a 7mm-08 using a light varmint profile 24-inch Shilen barrel. I bedded the barreled action in a laminate stock from Boyd's and installed a Timney trigger. I also painted the action and barrel with Duracoat. All I needed besides the parts was a Savage barrel nut wrench and a set of head-space gauges for 7mm-08 for the basic build. It was a fun project and the rifle is very accurate with the handloads I've loaded for the rifle.
There are a lot of great step-by-step instructions online. If you are looking for an affordable DIY project that is fun, not too hard with some basic skills, and will likely yield a solid shooter, I'd say "Go for it!"

I have done a 280AI on a Savage action myself. It works well. McGowan barrel, Bell and Carlson stock, Timney trigger. I got a set of gauges from Brownells and a buddy of mine sells wrenches and barrel nuts.

In 92 my father bought me a Savage 110 in 7mm rem mag. 25 years later I took that action as it was sentimental and had a 7mm STW built in a MDT chassis, with a heavy barrel and a big break
the rifle does exactly what I expected and couldn't be happier with the end product.
when researching my build I found many guys are using the Savage actions.

I have used Savage actions on 8 different rifle builds , all target rifles .
They work well and have an abundance of aftermarket parts available .
I find it interesting that many people call the barrel but system either ugly or cheap yet several custom builders are using that system now for switch barrel guns !

Have a look at Mystic Precision. Jerry Teo out of BC. One of the best in F class and the guru on savage builds. I got my prefit barrels triggers etc. from him
Here's his web site:

I got it from Jerry Teo at Mystic Precision. Good guy to deal with. Spec the twist rate, contour, crown and finish and he will deliver as promised! This is the second barrel I have purchased from him and will not hesitate to get a third.
