Another thing about Tripoloiding fish is.It takes about 3-4 years for trout .to gain weight from the experience.Also there are 2 kinds of tripoloids.So when you look at your fish stocking list. The lakes that have been stocked with AF3N.Which means they are all,females.These one's are,worth releaseing,to get the full effect of the procedure.The 3N tripoloids are nutured males,that will still grow,but the desire to spawn,goes to waste. can't spawn.The AF3N will get big,be silver bullets,fight like crazy.BC started doing this to RB,15 years ago.It is not unheard of to see,fish breaking into dbl.digit size.If given the chance,to be released.A15-18" will definitely test your knots & heart rate..

Interesting info. Hatchery had one year old rainbows for sale.

They ranged from 10 - 20 inch.

Another hatchery said browns are so skittish that they need automated feeders otherwise the trout freak out and won’t eat for a while.

To get browns to 12 inch can take 3 years.

Really cool thanks for that. At the risk of getting some popcorn thrown at me I sometimes miss the spring fishing and the colours of the diploids at the local potholes but that's small potatoes.

Is that a typo? I would guess one year old fish would be 10-20cm

No typo

Rainbows are spawned in the Fall at the hatchery. Eggs are hatch and fry reared over winter. By April/May they are 4-8 inch long. Hatcheries can continue feeding until Sept/Oct wherein the rainbows will be 10-20 inch long.

Bigger trout mean fewer per tank.

Factor of lots of food.

Saw one trout this year that was over 18 inch and likely 6 lb. all that growth in one year.

Sundance; You should clarify.That your fish ,are from a private hatchery.That get placed into a private lake. Fish reared in a gov't hatchery,a whole years growth. might be 7-8".Check your stocking reports

The stocked public lakes stocked in the spring would have the same size fish as a private lake. In fact some private hatcheries are contracted to supply some fish.

If you look at the stocking reports...some times they stock in late summer/early fall and the trout are bigger.

For public waters...the expectation is that stocking 8 inch trout will see them feed and grow bigger.

In a lake with perch...that growth is not attainable so one needs to stock bigger so having the hatcheries grow them till the fall is better.

Public hatcheries likely dont want to keep fish longer as it costs money and larger trout are more costly to transport. Also it doesnt give them a ton of time to clean and sterilize the equipment before starting a new batch.

Regardless of hatchery...public or private...rainbows spawned in the fall and reared to the Spring will be the same size if they feed them the same. No reason not to be.
