Default Just got this email, way to go Fish and Wildlife

here is what I received

News Release

June 22, 2012
Three found guilty of Wildlife Act offences

Edmonton... Separate investigations by Fish and Wildlife officers in Fort Macleod and High Prairie have resulted in the convictions of three people under the Wildlife Act .

On June 6, 2012, Nathan Benjamin Tschetter and William James Tschetter from the Fort Macleod area pled guilty in Fort Macleod Provincial Court to 10 counts under the Wildlife Act. Michel Blanchett, a guide/outfitter from Cold Lake pled guilty in High Prairie Provincial Court on March 20, 2012, to two counts under the Wildlife Act and one count under the Wildlife Regulation.

“Alberta’s fish and wildlife officers are dedicated to protecting our province’s wildlife resources,” said Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis. “Convictions like these are a result of their hard work and commitment to ensuring Albertans can continue to enjoy the natural beauty of our province.”

The charges in the Fort Macleod area resulted from a six-month undercover investigation into the trafficking of eagle parts and big game antlers. Nathan Tschetter received fines totaling $12,405 and a nine-year recreational hunting license suspension, while William Tschetter received fines totaling $27,220 and a 21-year recreational hunting license suspension. In addition, the individuals are prohibited from possessing birds of prey or parts of these birds: William for life, and Nathan for 10 years.

Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch’s investigation of Cold Lake guide/outfitter Michel Blanchett included assistance from the California Department of Fish and Game - Law Enforcement Division and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife - Enforcement Program. Blanchett was charged with hunting wildlife without a license, hunting wildlife using bait, and failing to submit guide/outfitter reports. The conviction resulted in fines totaling $16,500 and for the next five years he must report to the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch before and after hunting.

Anyone with information that would help solve any fish or wildlife crime in Alberta is asked to contact a local Alberta government Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch office or call the toll-free 24-hour Report-A-Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800. Anyone who provides information can remain anonymous and could qualify for a reward.

Kinda good....kinda bad....

I wonder why the outfitter wasn't banned from hunting for a time frame???

Also I wonder if APOS will suspend or ban him from their organization?

Great news.

Anyone want to bet that the APOS disciplinary committee won't sanction Blanchett at all?

So why is he being allowed to hunt at all for the next five years?

Posession of birds of Prey part seems moot. Illegal to posses them without a permit any time.

So if 2 Hutterites are trafficking in eagle feathers , odds are the colony itself was in on it or at the very least condoned it . What a place to launder money for illegally traded game, I don't know how they can enforce the hunting ban either those two will likely do whatever they want on colony land. Again the fines sound stiff but the colony will be paying for it. They may be displined within the colony it self though for bring shame and attention to them. Now I am assuming these two are still part of the colony , maybe they are out on there own , if so the punishment is fitting.

That could happen 10 times a day here in Fort Mcmurray at Gregoire Lake.. In 2 years have never seen a wildlife officer !!! Theres a zero limit on Walleyes .. And I have seen alot of Eyes go into peoples boat and not get released. Even go to Crappy tire in the fishing isle and listen to people brag about how many they keep .. Theres even a BBQ hidden in the bushes on the island.

I sent our wonderful Wildlife office a very detailed email about this and there responce was call if you see anyone poaching !! There honestly should be an officer there everyday ... Guess wont really matter another year or 2 the lake will be fished out of walleyes !!

I second this; not only pertaining to Gregoire though. Before an almost fatal allergic reaction to fish; I used to have a cushy job and spent almost 100 days a year on the water. RARE that I saw a wildlife officer. EVEN MORE RARE to go through a checkstop during fishing season. But hunting season - they are out actively, in hoards... never could figure this out, I guess its likely quite expensive to get the boats??? None the less; no question enforcement for fisheries has been poor at best over the years.

It seems that way about APOS, but should we as resident hunters care? I think we should. Perhaps time to have some discussions with SRD?
