Default Looking for the ultimate hunting knife

I have several knives but still looking for that ultimate hunting knife so I can retire everything else.

I like fixed blades
Blade around 4" long
Solid wood handle
Must be handsome
Must hold an edge for a long time

I know that Carbon steel holds a sharp edge longer but have also heard good things about powder coated steel.

Marttini Carbon steel blade knives is what I have been eyeing but would like to hear others opinions.

I have one of his folders I use for everyday carry and love it.

Would like to have Gene Ingram hunting knife, but can’t justify the cost since I have a hunting knife I love already...

Similar setup for 1/3 the price... depends what you are looking for. Not a camo sheath and smooth micarta instead of a dremelled micarta handle, but very sturdy blade.

http://ontarioknife.com/shop/rat-7.html

They also have a Rat 5 for shorter blade.

It's a bit longer than 4" but for an all purpose hunting knife look at a Ka-Bar. I've had mive for 15 years now and still going strong.

I like my Buck Gen 5 with cocobolo handle best. Great skinner and all around although I wouldn't do any heavy chopping with it.

The Marttiini is in this pic second from the bottom on the right.Spalted birch handle, three laminations in the blade- typical of many Finnish knives.

from the top left
A Remington stockman's folder
Two kershaws- boning knife and a caper.
two customs
top right A Gerber Pixie
Three Russels
the Marttiini Sami style hunting knife
and my Puma Jagdtaschenmesser hunting folder, my main knife

Just got myself a Ka-Bar this year not necessarily the knife, I will use for skinning or caping or anything but early season I like it on my belt.

Definitely not a skinning knife, but does a great job at removing heads from deer up to moose, or chopping down 3" trees among many other bush crafty needs. Mine goes with me everywhere.

Someone else mentioned Cutco knives. Here are the two hunting knives they make:

https://www.cutco.com/products/produ...-outdoor-knife

https://www.cutco.com/products/produ...op-point-knife

I bought the drop point with the double D edge because they'll sharpen it for free if I send it to them and I just wanted to try it out. I've used it many times in the last 4 years and it's never needed to be sharpened. I find I prefer a clip point for field dressing though and now wish I had purchased the clip point version.

If I were to buy another Cutco hunting knife (I'm thinking about it....lol), it would be the clip point with a typical straight edge. While I like how well the double-D holds it's edge, I wouldn't buy it the second time as I have no problems keeping an edge on a knife myself.

I also own a Cutco fileting knife and if you're a fisherman, you won't find a better knife anywhere. I like that the blade can go from 6" to 9". I use 6" when pulling the filets off of walleye, and slip it out to 9: to pull the meat off the skin. I found the blade was too sharp to start with and had to run the edge down a piece of wood once or twice before using it because if I didn't, it cut through the skins every time I tried to pull meat off the skin. If I give it a couple strops on the steel I have to run it down wood once or it's too sharp. I've had that knife for about 10 years now and cleaned a very large number of walleye with it and other than an occasional strop on the steel, have never had to sharpen it.

I do own quite a few other knives, and do use one of them a lot for field dressing, I do know you can't go wrong with the Cutco's and I suspect if I do break down and buy the clip point straight edge, it'll be the only one I use anymore.

Check out the Enzo scandi grind knives (Finland).

You can get them in 01 or stainless G10 steels, workwearcanada.com carries them in micarta handles, curly birch or pick up a blank and make your own handle.

While back I bought a Fallkniven F6 blank and custom fitted it with a forest green micarta handle as a gift for my good hunting buddy. It's his favourite knife.

I’ve got a bench made it’s unbelievable sharp but I’ve got big hands and it doesn’t fit all that good nice knife though. I pack it and a cutco knife much like the picture rubber doesn’t slip fights perfect very sharp and I don’t loose it when I put it down. I may have lost a few along the way lol. I only ever use drop points for hunting purposes.

I also use a Cutco. Great knife, lifetime warranty and free sharpening when required. I used mine for 10 years, I sent it to them and they sent it back like new. If you want nice looking instead of generic looking Cutco has a beauty hunting knife available. Check their website.

I'm no knife connoisseur but I've used the $400+ knives and always tend to go back to my old fixed blade Buck knife.

That Enzo knife is a superb blade. My friend in Austria build himself a knife using that blade. Its made by Brisa of Finland. I may consider it but I would like a slightly fancier handle.

By fancier, this outfit carries a great range of carbon, stabilized wood, G10 etc:

https://www.texasknife.com/vcom/prod...fb2008e600911c

Depends on whether you want to build your own-for me it gives an already quality knife a character feel to an already superior tool.

Correction in order-mean't to say VG10 stainless & Fallkniven F1 which is the "downed pilot" standard carry for the Swedish airforce.

https://www.knifecenter.com/info/knife-blade-materials

http://knifeinformer.com/discovering...t-knife-steel/

It is all about the quality of the steel and comfort.

The guys here on AO have really cooperated in sharing.

If you search "knives" or "knife steel", there is a ton of information here.

As for pricing, any good steel is expensive but worth every penny. You want edge retention then you pay up front.

Good luck,

On a sandy river shore running out of daylight & bull moose to gut, skin, quarter & hang back in camp is the place the guys owning cheap blades (usually) realize the value of owning quality knife steel.

Fantoni;
Field dressed 2 elk and 2 WT deer.....There was enough to do one more deer on the same edge.

With 20 strops each way it was back to shaving sharp.....

https://www.lamnia.com/en/p/9550/kni...ng-knife-black

A tiny one I love is my Fallkniven WM1
http://www.bushcraftcanada.com/fallk...cfm?product=28

For chitz and giggles, a couple of years back, I field dress a deer with a Swiss Army Knife....including cutting off the legs with the enclosed saw....worked just fine......

Default My knife

I have an Old timer, by uncle Henery. You know the one. It was sold at Canadian tire in the 80’s, has the useless touch up stone in its little keeper on the sheeth. Anyway I have had it on my hip for 30 years. It has some how taken a slight curve that perfectly lines up with my hip, its weird, maybe too many naps, or a couple slip and falls while hunting? It has a super hard blade that is difficult to sharpen but is wicked sharp when done right. I love it. My wife just got me a Benchmade bushcraft knive for my birthday. S30v steel, pretty, nice and sharp and by all accounts my last knife. That will be my new knife from now on. I thought i was ready to let go of my old timer untill I realized i had dropped it on one last hunt. When I got home and realized what had happened I went into full blown panic mode. It was really quite pathetic as it was just a knife, 20-30 bucks maybe. Well i drove the hour and a bit to where I parked and there it was in the snow. Picked it up and instantly all was right again. I’ll have my new knife on my hip this year and retire my old knife to my gun cabinet-maybe. Uugh, decisions. Stupid knife.

Made by Schrade weren't they? I know I still have an old one somewhere that I broke the tip off of back in the 70s prying with it. Rexall Drugs used to sell them in Peace River back in the day. Good solid knives.
