Default Best place to get a merino or similar base layer?

I am looking to get a full merino base layer or something similar before the temps start dropping off.
Can anyone recommend a good budget friendly base layer to go with?

Ive used MEC for sometime. The cost is reasonable and the quality high. And they carry tall consistently.

I also think Ice Breaker is very good but MEC is my budget.

If I recall correctly, I bought my Icebreaker merino undies at Cabela's. They do go on sale, which I realize is a relative term, on occasion there.

Wait till Costco gets in their Merino, should be fairly soon.

Agreed. I think the merino from Costco is the best bang for your buck, unless you find some that is very on sale somewhere else.

I found the Costco Merino to be very thin, love it for sleeping in though. I have had real good luck with the polyester fleece bases from Cabela's, the Cabela's brand. The various weights go on sale often, I just watch for them. The only problem with poly is that if you sweat a lot it will start to stink fairly quickly. But it is very warm.

I was looking at the Costco stuff but all I could find was a "blend" not even 10% Merino. I went with the KUIU base layer that was 90% Merino and had the zip off pants, best thing I've bought not disappointed one bit. If you wait for the big yearly sale and with the dollar getting a bit stronger it shouldn't be too bad of a hit. I also have some First Lite on sale that was 80% Merino, you get what you pay for and I might have given MEC an opportunity if they weren't anti hunting.

If I could swing it I'd buy Kuiu's bottoms. In my opinion the zip off feature is ingenious.

They do a run of 100% merino long sleeves every year, but they usually go pretty quickly. The 'blend' stuff is comfy for a day, but I also had a good chuckle looking at the tiny amount of actual merino in there. I will also agree with the KUIU Merino bottoms. I'll never go back to not having a full-zip on the legs base layer.

Costco is the cheapest place. I have a pike of icebreaker but it's expensive and even when it's on sale it's not cheap. I always grab some from Costco when they have it now.

My KUIU merino is probably my favorite hunting piece(s). The zip-off bottoms are amazing, it's awesome that I don't have to take my boots off mid-morning when it starts to warm up.

Icebreaker here as well, it's worth the cost.

Campers village or cabelas for the best prices, they are usually within a dollar of each other. I won't spend money at window lickers incorporated (mec) unless there is no other store that has what i need and I need it today. Let's not forget their anti hunting campaigns. Gotta love walking in there in camo, just to annoy the granolas

You wear them as an outer layer?

No. With the zip of base I can just drop the outer layer, zip off the merino , then pull the outer layer back up. No need to take boots off because I don't actually have to remove the outer layer.

One of those things that makes you wonder why someone didn't think of that long ago.

I cant see my self unzipping my long johns because all of a sudden im too hot.
I use the filson heavy weight wool long johns and the lighter weight MEC ones depending on the condition. And don't wear a ginch under them either.

Although I went to a few other brands for awhile, I'm back to Icebreaker. I never found anything as good, though certainly found lots cheaper.

There is an APP available called CAMOFIRE. They offer brand name hunting gear at a huge discount. Had Merino wool on there yesterday but can't remember the brand name. Very good price but I missed the deal. The deals rotate based on what is available etc. so I assume it will be back on there.

Default Wait for a sale

I've tried the Mec brand and found it to be too light duty for repeated wear. I poked a finger thru the shirt putting it on and put a finger thru the bottoms pulling up my socks one time!
I've settled on Icebreaker. Managed to get some on sale this year from 911 Supply in yyc.
I've also used Kuiu merino shirts- well made, and first lite merino shirt- also well made.

Cheers
John

Yup...
Yesterday, Camofire had Black Ovis merino base layer garments on sale from approximately 40% to 65%...depending on the item. I ordered a few tops and bottoms to give it a try. The items featured rotate every day...so there is a chance they come back around in a few days. Popular sizes go fast though...oftentimes see smokin' deals only to find out they're sold out of my size.

I used ice breakers for several years, great product.

Since last fall I've been using first lite, great product as well.

What blows my mind, there's still hunters financing the antis by buying MEC stuff.
