Diatomaceous earth combating slugs
http://www.ufa.com/products/product....-earth-22-6-kg
Does this work on garden slug problems in Calgary? Mine is like a plague.
Anyone have experience?

How do you apply it? Just a dusting? Wet the plants first? In the morning their trails are everywhere.

Depending on what you are trying to do. If you want slug control, plant then dust the ground. The little SOBs crawl through the DE and it's like broken glass.
I also dust plants when they get growing for cutworms etc. Wet or dry.
I add it to my dogs food daily for wormer. Dust them for fleas. BTW haven't seen a flea or tick on my dogs for years, even with packing flea bag coyotes and foxes home.
Be advised. DE is very fine. Like talcum powder. Use common sense when you handle it.

Diatomaceous earth is plankton skeletons. They have pointy parts and sharp edges that cut through the waxy coating on insects, causing them to lose moisture through their shells, and dehydrate to death. The earth itself is inert and non-toxic.
Don't know the process of how it works for dog worms, and I don't know if it'd work for slugs, as they're always secreting moisture.
Ok, so maybe this isn't that helpful a post....

I remember dusting with those mitts as a Nuclear Biological Chemical measure in decontamination drills way back when. Dad used it on his rose bushes religiously. I always had a pretty flower for a nice smile way way back when.....

See? Should have left the skunks
We had good luck with seaweed back on the rock, won't find so much of it here... There is a list you can check out.

We used to use it when our calves were licking dirt and getting scours. Gave them a little tub of it, their faces were all white with the powder but scours went away.

Absorbs water, used in drilling mud for that reason as well. versatile stuff.

I take a tablespoon of it with a glass of water/ juice every day. Have doen that for the past couple years. Helps promote hair and nail growth and gets rid of any bugs you may have. Has also helped with my high chloesterol problem by cleaning out the circulation in the body... plus some other stuff... Cheap and effective. You can buy it at UFA farmers coop i believe.
Theres a decent thread on this stuff over at the Timebomb2000 forum website in case anyones interested.

If you use it in your garden it may effect beneficial critters, like earthworms.

Oddly enough. Earthworms aren't that important in Alberta if your turning the soil every year.
They are also not native to Alberta and are pushing out the natives. Very invasive.

There are several brands/types of DE, use "food grade" in your garden.
