Sounds like a snort or a blow clearing nostrils to smell danger better ....... I have had white tails do that when they spot me

That's a deer telling you you're busted! He's snorting/wheezing. They generally do this when they smell you. They're basically blowing their nose to get your smell out of their nostrils as well as to warn other deer.
I've seen them do this around me when they see me only as well, but I'll know if they smell too because they run off immediately. If they're still hanging around and circling and snorting, they're warming other deer of something dangerous. They generally won't know what you are until you stand up or until they smell you. If they smell you, they'll do this everytime. A deer doesn't question his nose. His eyes... Yes. His nose... Never.

The only thing worse is a than a deer blowing is a speed goat, them stupid goats follow you around and keep blowing at you letting every mule deer in the valley know your there. I hate speed goats!

I've had a few come to me by "blowing" back at them but that sound is usually followed by white flags disappear in the distance.

Yup, busted! Mule does are the worst because they keep coming back to see if they can actually see you.

Windego...stay put and don't move. The wind in the trees and the birds will go silent also...when it passes through the wind will pick up and the birds will sing...if you feel a warm air movement on the back of your neck stay still....

I always stay put even if I hear that. I know lots of guys that think the hunt is over and get out. But earlier this month I had a deer snorting at me and two minutes later a moose walked out which I shot!

I hate that sound....heard it way too many times.
It is a pretty cool sound though.
Do any other ungulates make a similar sound?
ie: do moose and elk make any kind of sound when they bust, or do they simply slip silently away?
I also have had them stick around on occasion by "blowing" back. That can be fun. (just never even close to within bow range)

I've had Moose and Elk "bark" at me.
Craziest sound I heard from a moose was the "roar". Wish I could get a recording of it sometime, it's unreal.

Had this happen to me for the first time at the beginning of this season... I figured out what the sound was, but the sheer volume and how far away I was to be able to hear it sure did surprise me...

As mentioned above, you totally got busted by a whitetail deer. From stuff I have read in magazines and online, a deer can smell you from 400 yards away or more. I also agree with the comments above about not moving. Just because that one deer is spooked doesn't mean your hunt is over. Just the other night I got snorted at while still hunting with the bow. 250 yards further up the cut line, the biggest buck I've ever seen while hunting came out.(sad story, rather not talk about my horrible miss).
I have a bit of a theory with the snorting. I have only ever seen does do it. Every time I've been busted by bucks, they just stick up their tails and quietly run away. I think it is so they're not giving away their whereabouts! Does on the other hand, will snort, even if they are up wind from me. It's strange, that I've never heard a buck snort. I'm sure they probably do it, just haven't seen it myself. Good luck getting your bear.

I had a moose give me the "screw you" snort and "bark" the first time I was out hunting them some 40 years ago, after which I heard nothing but bush smashing. Rather unnerving, to say the least, when you have never heard it before!!!!
