Default Edmonton's Surprising Deer Paradise

I've watched these deer for years with interest. Here's an article with some more information, if you're curious.

Makes you wonder why a mule deer would be more aggressive than a whitetail

I seen some nice WT bucks in there in 2004 & the years following. No doubt died of old age.

I work in the south portion of the city and I like watching for them! I think I've only ever seen mule deer in there. I counted 7 last weekend.

Nice to see.

There used to be a herd of 70 or 80 whitetails around the international airport up until 6-7 years ago. Deforestation of a few 20 to 80 acre parcels and development and you don't see the deer anymore. Quite a few of them usually wintered in the little valley southwest of the Walmart right in Leduc. The area is called Deer Valley.

I drive by there everyday and sometimes look at them with the Binos. I can tell you that last year and this year there is/was only 1 mulie in there and it's a buck.
7 or 8 whitetails, at least half of them bucks. Nothing huge, but a couple decent ones.
My understanding is that the coyotes got at least 1 fawn this spring. There's at least 2 of the buggers that hang out in there and they look healthy. They howl at dawn and dusk just like rural dogs do.

I've seen as many as 12 on the field, have worked across the road for the last 29 years. And yes there are a couple of shooters in there

I've worked on this site, pretty neat to watch the Bucks sparring this time of year. They are basically domesticated, perfectly comfortable 20 yards from you eating the apples people bring in for them. Buck to doe ratio is really high, about 50:50. Strong 4x4 genetics from what I've seen.

They have pictures of moose that have wandered into the site as well, nice little haven.

Coyotes are everywhere in Edmonton, and are definitely in the site.

Somewhat related, my neighbor advised me that she saw 2 white tail fawns grazing in the field near Ecole Maurice Lavallee which is on the east side of Mill Creek. Kinda cool that they'll come that far into the City.

I have seen 13 deer right under the high level bridge so the deer are definitely deep in the city.

Agreed. That was my count last year too.

Default Edmonton's Surprising Deer Paradise

I first seen these deer in 2005 when I worked in that area. Ate many of my lunches parked on Parson Rd watching them. Last fall there was 1 really nice big buck in there, i would always see him lurking around a distance from the rest of herd. But I haven't looked recently to see if the big guy is back/still here.
