Default Is warm water an issue in early July?

So... I’m no expert when it comes to fly fishing. But I’m planning a weekend trip on the Forstry trunk road the first or second weekend of July. I’ve read warnings about warm temperatures and making it hard on caught fish.

Will high temperatures and low water levels be an issue for fishing Nordegg and north to Robb in early July? Or is that more of a southern Alberta thing.

It can be an issue anywhere, the best thing to do is not fish the rivers if you have doubts about the survivability of fish in those water temps, some larger rivers will still be A-OK to fish and you should focus on those instead. Take it by ear and do what’s best for the fish and you should make the right call.

Hi,

With a typical year, you will just miss runoff. You will be fine from the water temp thing.

What Don said. July is early and water temps are low. If you were going mid-August then you should be even more wary about water temps. Obviously with a very warm July leading into a very warm beginning of August.

Thank you everyone. That’s very helpful. Even if the fishing time is slim it’ll still be a great trip.

Water temp will be cool in July. The issue that the water might still be too dirty! June monsoon can really extend the run off in this area. Fairfax lake is pretty good and Lovett and Silkstone lakes can be dynamite! Have fun exploring!
