Thumbs down Thanks Ford!

How did you know I wanted to spend the holiday Monday installing 5.4 timing chain tensioners? Much appreciated, I wouldn't expect them to make it to 100k either.

Might as well do the cam phasers too while you're in there. . .

I'm skipping them, they can be done without pulling the front cover at least. Tensioners, guides, and vct solenoids. We'll see how it works out. I'm in deep money wise already. I installed this used engine in October, went with a newer model since it's got the updated parts in it already. Turns out that was a waste of money. I caught this problem early so I'm hoping it's ok.

I'd feel bad driving a Tacoma too. Things are sized for women and midgets

The box was big enough to bring his new potted geraniums home.

What can I say I'm sucker for punishment. To prove that point I'll admit I've considered a 6.0 ford for a second truck. All things considered it's been a decent truck but these timing components are junk.

You don't need a big truck if you got big hands.

PS: I'm 6'4" and fit just fine.

... just call it regular sked maintanence ... every 100 thousand and also carry 2 or 3 spare coil pack's in the cab ...

Wrong in this case. Change the oil all you want it's not going to keep a gasket from blowing out.

A chain tensioner with a sturdy metal housing rather than plastic would cure the problem I think.

That's why you do your research. Never buy a 5.4l.

Coming from someone who's always had Fords.

I've owned the truck since 05. The 5.4 issues were not as well known then.

Another happy Ford fan.

I feel for you, I was once one myself.

doing phasers and not going deeper is a total waste of time anyway, what happens is the cam valleys wear and oil pressure is lost going to the vct's. If you do not get the heads done it is worthless.

Just run Royal Purple 15w40 and call it a day unless you do the heads. I was told about RP and did a couple sets of phasers, vct, guides, chains, everything except heads twice, never again.
I have a 2007 that I used last winter plowing and it barely ran. Switched to RP 15w40 and it runs like a champ. Wonderful bandaid fix for old motors.

That's what drove my decision to put this used engine in. I pulled a couple cam caps on the original engine and they were scored. IMO it's poor advice to say just run 15/40 unless it's too far gone already. In that case yes run heavier oil. I ran 15/40 in the old one for years.

This one had chain rattle at startup which just started. No broken guides, minimal phaser noise. I'm hoping I caught it in time. I'll know soon enough.

Edit- The caveat to that statement should be that that I don't pay for labour so there's not much to lose going this route.

My phasers are gone (two years ago) in my '05 5.4L Triton. Between the spark plugs and cam phasers......what a piece of junk! I'm running 10W30 with Lucas heavy engine wear oil and I'm getting 18.6L/100 kms. I bought the cam phaser replacement kit with water pump off eBay for about $500. IMO you just might as well do everything one time instead of tearing the engine apart twice.
OH, and replacing the spark plugs cost me $1300!

Picking up my '17 F150 with 3.5L ecoboost on Wednesday.
