Default trapline gun

Well the Turd has made my mini14 trapline gun prohibited so Im looking for suggestions I cary the rifle on handlebar mounts sled or quad so it has to be short Stainless barrel and action , synthetic stock and must have a detachable magazine .weight is a factor Moving the cartridge up in size so I could use it for deer.

6.5 CM or 243 never had either before a 257 would be nice but rare .
A savage storm lite has a 20 inch barrel and 5.5 pounds i do have access to a gun smith
never had a savage .
Any other ideas would be welcome .
Gun or cartridge

Thanks

Ruger builds a great little Hawkeye ( I think) 16" barreled 708
Used one at the range , obnoxious little bigger with a muzzle brake on it!

too bad they don't make the little ruger american ranch bolt action in stainless, that would be one of my wishlist items on that rig, 36" long bolt action with 16.1" barrel, that can take mini-30 or AR style magazines, they come in big game legal cartridges like the 7.62x39(mini-30 magazines), 6.5 Grendel(AR magazines)...it's a great size, maybe the cerekote is enough protection though?

thinking on of those stainless carbine leverguns in 30-30 perhaps? or do you prefer detach magazine and more range potential(or both)?

the savage stainless lightweight chopped to 18" barrel would be pretty handy with a lightweight 32-36mm objective leupold on it

Can't find a little Native ancestry in your family history ?

I’d be looking at the ruger American predator with a detachable mag. Yeah cheap gun and not stainless but i would get it cerakoted.

Or I would just get a lever gun. Get that in a 357mag 44mag 30/30 .35 rem or 22mag.

I carry a ranch hand in 357 mag. With upgraded sights.
If you want a rifle with detachable mag and handy but enough umph, I’d suggest a cz carbine in 7.62x39. Shooting soft points.

Buy some decent ammunition and a SKS. Great quad / trapline gun. It will go bang any time of the year in any condition. Won't cost much money. Who cares if you drag it across a barb wire fence or drop it in the swamp. 30 cal. that is accurate enough for the distances you will be shooting.

Yes and having this and newer ruger American Ranch...it’s a touch choice between them. Only downside is neither are stainless.

My thoughts exactly. I have a spare mag that I’m going to modify to make into a detachable 5 round flush mount. If it works well I’ll grab a few more and repeat. The gun is cheap, reliable and you won’t feel bad it it gets a little beat up. It’s not stainless, but I hear black bbq spray paint is a close second, hahaha.

My main trapline gun for Many years was either a C.I.L. 310. Or 180, 64 Anschutz actions , one a single shot the other a magazine rifle.
I never carried s heavier rifle unless I was going out explicitly for big game animals , then it was either a Lee Enfield or a single shot 30/30.

That was over 30 years ago, These days it might be a different choice , probably s Savage .22 but I would more than likely still be using s single shot rifle .

Ya all one needs if that what it is used for,
There is a Ruger compact in 308 on gun nutz 16.5 inch barrel
or get a H&R 22 hornet.
Pack in a scabbered along side vs handle bars may find better
as well.

oh yeah, ruger 77 stainless bolt actions, get a .357 mag or .44 mag! you can shoot deer with those, maybe you can shoot 38 special and whatever the 44 short one is too for dispatch?...didn't think of these, they are light short and handy, detach mag, i think they have iron sights but would be real handy with a 2-7x33 or fixed 4x and likely come with matching stainless rings to boot?
