silhouette decoys? any good?
just wondering if anyone has had much luck with silhouette decoys? i have 0 decoys and im just getting in to goos hunting. any suggetions? do i need other shells or standing decoys or can i just use all silos? cost is an issue. thanks for the help

Silos are a great additive to a spread, the trouble ive had with trying to use them alone is they pretty much disappear when the geese get over them lol. Now we use a 50/50 shells and silos and it seems to work pretty good.

I use silos quite a bit and they work well. The best IMO are the Real Geese Pro II's, and I have some Big Flock silos as well.

They work
You need a lot but they are cheap, and you can handle them yourself. When you place them remember what one previous member said, they disappear when the geese are over head, they will also disappear as they swing if you have them all facing the wind. Place them so when the geese are low no matter where they are they see some decoys.

never had a problem with them easy to carry easy to pick up work great ...shot 33 one morning hunt with 5 guys not too bad im thinking

Real easy to pack, not much room to keep them, light, great for filling out a spread - what's not to like?

If you can, invest in Real Geese silos ( Pro Series tht do not shine) s everything else is kinda 'junky' IMHO. You cn get very good results with Real Geese as you can with full bodies. This is my experience.

I was looking really hard in making my own, I was at home depot and saw a 4/8 sheet of 1/8th hard board for just over 10$ I figure I can get 8-10 out of a sheet. Weight is a bit of an issue, but since we drive to the the spot and dump everything off, its only a bit of an issue.

My son did up a mess of speckle bellies and snows using coreplast - wokred pretty well!

Paintability is very good, but my son used a special decoy paint IIRC.
You can get that stuff at sign shops, etc....

Silo's are amazing! A couple of pointers. Put pairs in an L shape. I will try and post a pic if I can. What it does is when geese are turning or looking around it makes it look like the geese are walking. Geese don't look down when straight overhead so don't worry about them "disappearing" it is when they are turning is when they lose sight. So, if you take 2 and set them up in an L it looks like the geese are moving. A big key is to never face all your decoys into the wind. The only time geese do this is when they land or are about to take off. Face them in all different directions. Hope this helps.

Most hardware stores carry 4x8 sheets of it, and I believe its around $20/sheet roughly. I use regular tremclad and krylon ultra flat camo paint for mine...

Thats all we used 25 years ago and they worked fine.
For some reason they don't seem to work as well now??
I guess the geese are smarter now...............

The one thing I really like about the commercial onse it the varried perspectives, Replicating the standart side view is easy enough. I have been throwing the idea around of some sort of front view or even a top view for when they are flying over. what do you think.

Fine blade on a jigsaw. Stack a few pieces together, and cut them out all at the same time. This is by far the fastest way to do it...
