Good on you Nube! Nice gesture. I have taken a few young guys out checking snares with me this year, and it's always a pleasure. Good way for them to learn.

I just know I would have given my right nut to go on a trapline when I was a kid. If we can make it work next year then I am all for it.

Just following up on this post from awhile back. The critter was indeed a porky like a lot of you fellas mentioned. There's a badger somewhere in this area and it was probably wishful thinking on my part.

Hey Badger Bill (aka Bill9044), I'm going to need some tips on the best way to trap this fella.

Default My Trapping Story

Hey guys just got back from elk hunting and fur trapping.
We set up a few martin boxes with beaver and magnum musk lure.

After checking a box the second day found this fellow. Robbing my bait.

After 4 days and an elk we found this fellow in a box. Great catch

After checking another box found that some of the bait was being eaten through the wire mesh.

Poor pic but the red meat was pulled through the mesh and still snuck through the trigger without tripping the trap.
So I put a box at the base of the tree. And guess what happened I found this fella the next day.

Lots of tracks and scat around but no marten would really commit.

It was quite warm +8C. So I read a set on a forum with a beaver in a tree and a bunch of running poles with 120s on it. So we tried it out.

The bottom right you can see a 120 on the pole.
2 days later we found this fellow heading up the pole to the beaver bait.

After total of 12 days a trapper friend and I caught all of these.

My friends kids helped out with some squirrels weasels and a couple marten. We had a great time snowshoeing in and out of sets. Lots of skidoo issues. I swear they make em to breakem. I would have thought there would have been more caught but as most of you know it was hard to snab martin this year. A friend of mine did me a favor of checking some snares for me and he set and pulled out 5 yotes.
So this year as last year I came home with memories and another Taxidermy Bill.
I know most of you guys catch martin and such in numbers that smash mine but I thought I'd throw some pics up. I enjoy everyone's pics. And stories Thanks
Hope the auction treats you guys well.
Bill

Looks great Bill thanks for posting. I love the boxes. Do you guys think a screen in the box like that works as well as a box the marten can get at the bait easily? I don't see why it wouldn't but wondered if anyone noticed any difference.

We had some boxes that didn't have the see through mesh compartment. And just wired the bait to the top and had no success. I am not saying that the box was the reason it just kinda worked out that way. I stole the idea from the trapping rendevous martin seminar. The instructor ( don't remember his name) very smart fellow had a box that was similar with the mesh compartment and a see through hole in top. I also used the trap holder on them so I know it is set and stable. I am also not a martin expert and I am not sure if it snowed the boxes would be great or not. More experimentation.

PCP it sounds liek your not catching many right now? I am not catching either and it was the same this time last year. Either I have caught 90% of them around my baits and only getting the odd one moving in or it is close to breeding and they could care less about a bait? Also the fact I do not have much bait out might be another thing. Do you guys find things slow right now? I get the odd track by my bait but they do not stick around and just keep going.

Both my baits have had very little vote activity. The one bait I was sure I pretty muched trapped out 35 on one and 12 on another. I'm starting a new bait tomorrow. Good spot lots of yotes. I am only gonna try and snag a few more then shut er down I want to hit that bait spot hard next year. Now I am gonna target some beaver mostly for bait and damage control and spring rats season right quick. So much fun getting rats. Hope you guys had a great season. It seems like no season is the same.
