Nikon scopes....reviews
Any comments on the Nikon scopes? I'm looking for inexpensive 3x10 or 4x12. Suitable for a youth rifle for a few years (5ish). Will upgrade scope later if required. Rifle is a tikka 7mm-08. Thx

I have a monarch 3 on my 30-06, the only complaint I have with it is the circles on the BDC. They are good from 0-300 yards but going beyond that they take up to much of the target and you lose accuracy

bought a pro-staff for the wife's 7-08 in a 3-9. Works ok but the light gathering of the scope is the pits. A cheaper vortex bought about the same time turned out to be a better buy for us.

I've got a buckmaster 6-18x40 on my SPS Varmint .243Win, and the Pit Boss has a Monarch 3, 4-16x42 on his .260 Rem.
Both scopes track well, and have good clarity in their optics, hold zero without fault, and are good value.

I've had the same experience. Have a monarch 3 3-12x42 on a 30-06 and have zero complaints. Gathers light well. Clear. Easy to adjust. Holds zero. It's just a solid feeling and solid built scope. Purchased it while on sale last year and had a chance to hunt with it.
Purchased it with the same intention of installing a different scope at some point down the road but have decided to keep it right where it is. For the money I think it's a fantastic value. I also love Leupold and wouldn't hesitate to purchase another of either the Nikon or Leupold.
So far it's been a great experience with the monarch. Hoping it stays that way.

I bought a prostaff 5 (I think the number was) for my 7mm-08 for a budget built rifle. It worked amazing considering all my other glass is Leupold, the glass clarity is better then vortex in my opinion and tracked better when zeroing the scope then a vortex did. I told my brother to buy one instead of a vortex and he loves it's. Shoots 5" groups at 500 yards. I'll buy another Nikon any day without hesitation.

I have owned three Monarch 3 scopes, and they are excellent for the price. I briefly owned a Prostaff that came as part of a deal, and I wasn't nearly as impressed.

Have two monarchs both nikoplex reticle which was hard to find, I would not hesitate to buy another very comparable to higher end leupold in my mind.

IMO Nikon optics are the best bang for your buck.
So far all but one gun wears a Nikon.
I just picked up two more from Prophet River on liquidation.
One for my 870 2-7x32 slugger and one Inline XR for my TC Omega.
I currently have a Prostaff 4-12x 40 Nikoplex reticle, Prostaff 5 2.5-10x40 , Monarch 3 2.5-10x42, Omega (TC Endevour) 3-9x40.
All have the BDC (except the standard Prostaff), which I use with the Spot-On App.
My binos and LRF are Nikon as well.

Not on the cheap end but I bought a Nikon X1000 4-16x50. Nearly $900 and one of the best scopes I've used.
Also a big fan of Nikon bino's.
With their status in the camera industry, which is based on their lens optical quality you can't really go wrong with Nikon unless you are looking for a particular feature they don't offer.

Agreed, the Prostaff blows compared to the Monarchs I had, maybe the newer ones are better, but i wouldn't hold my breath. I'd buy used before a Prostaff.

You'd be hard pressed to see the difference between my prostaff 5 and monarch 3 scopes. Overall the nikons are very solid as well as their binoculars.

There are maybe 4 prostaff - original, 2, 5 and I think the 7 now. the first 2 are in the budget category and lack some features for sure but the 5 is quite a step up , real close to the monarch's.
I have a 3-12 monarch on an 8 mag in Talleys and it's nice and have a handful of the pro 5's, a older titanium and original prostaff. If weight is no concern then they are excellent choices, +1 for Nikon.

I have a couple of Nikon Prostaff scopes (one is a Rimfire for my .22). Both do a great job for the price - I'm quite happy with them.

Ok, didn't know there were so many, The one I looked through was poor, glad they have improved or at least increased the options. I haven't looked through a bad Monarch and that includes old ones that didn't even specify a number.

I think they (Nikon) were forced to improve due to other name brands coming out of the woodwork with same or better lenses and warranties.
Vortex has a lifetime warranty compared to Nikons earlier Lifetime Limited Warranty with which I had displeasure of dealing with when my binos snapped pooped the bed. It cost me half of what I paid for them for repairs, I was none too happy.
What really brought me to the Nikon world of optics was the Omega scope for muzzleloading. 5" eye relief omg!!
My Encore was kicking the crap out of my other scopes and I was getting kisses from the scope. As well I compared the brightness to my Bushnell scopes and they didn't compare.
Since then (2005/6) Nikon has improved over the last decade imo in order to keep up to the rest of the sporting optics world.

Nikon PS5
I picked up a Prostaff 5 4.5-18x40 with the illuminated Nikoplex reticle. For the money, It has some pretty cool features. Illuminated reticle, Parallax adjustment, Extra sunshade, and Additional xr custom turrets. Everything seems to be pretty decent. Now.. comparing this to my 4 year old Redfield [Budget Leupold] 4-12X40 Duplex reticle, the fine detail Is actually noticeably better In the Redfield. Hard to find a scope with those features for the money though. I'm actually really impressed with the quality of glass In the Redfield line of scopes. Leupold Has restored the Redfield brand IMO. My eyes couldn't really tell the difference Between the Redfield and Leupolds that I compared Side-by-side. I would grab a few in the same price range That you're looking at And see if you can tell a difference. They all pretty much have bulletproof warranties..I'd grab a Redfield If I were in your shoes.

If you are looking at the Nikon PROSTAFF 3=9 now is the perfect time to buy. With Nikon's Promotion going on it is under $150. I have one on my son's Tikka T3 .308. Zero issues in 6 years including one sling break that resulted in a 20 foot fall. A few scratches but not even a loss of zero. One of the features I like is the quick focus eye piece found on Nikon's scopes. Lets me make sure what I am looking at is as clear as possible. Make sure you utilize Spot On if you choose the BDC reticle version too. Feel free to drop me a note if you have any question's. Definitely check out this sites Sponsor's too.

I have a 40mm prostaff 5. I really like it. it works very well with the Nikon shooting app.
I will only buy Nikon from now on. Although, my Redfield 50mm 3x9 is also awesome for the price.

Prostaff 5
I run the Prostaff 5's, 2.5-10x40, on both my T3 260 and T3 7mm Rem Mag. I think they are excellent scopes and occasional they will come on sale at Cabelas for a fairly substantial discount.

scope
Nikon's PROSTAFF 4-12x40 BDC scope is one heck of a value. I put on on my son's and Father In-Law's rifles 6 years ago and neither has missed a deer on not had a one stop shot since. My Father In-Law used to average about 10 shots per deer before getting a decent scope and learning how the BDC reticle worked. My son took right to it and has taken 12 deer with 12 shots. The scope happens to be under a Nikon Promo so check out some of this site's sponsors to see if they can save to $30.

I've had good luck with the nikons. Have the monarch 3 in 2.5-10x42 and a 4-16: been happy with both although I do find the circles on the BDC reticle to be a bit too cumbersome for anything past about 400 yards. Would probably go for their mildot reticle next time.
Also have the Monarch 5 binos which I've been happy with. Good value for the money for the scopes and binos
Can't say the same about the Nikon range finders...

Looked through one of these at Bashaw Sports. IMHO beat the crap out of a Zeiss Conquest HD I was looking at and was several hundred $ less. I have a couple Monarch 3s and wouldn't trade them for anything in their price range.
