Default Ruger No 1 275 Rigby

Thinking of pulling the pin on a Ruger No1. Not sure if I should go with the 275 Rigby or 7mm08. I have a BLR in 7mm08 ( very happy with it)but moving more towards the Rigby. I was a hand loader at one time but last few years work has taken the time away, hoping to head back to it soon with retirement. Anyway looking for any info or opinion's on the 275 Rigby, in the No1 never had one. Thanks.

get the Rigby, it has a marvelous history ... the 7-08 not so much, but every bit as adequate as the Rigby

For me there would be no contest - .275/7x57 all the way.

If I ever get another No1 it will be a 7x57

If you already have 708n and are going to get back into hand loadiing , I would go with thee 7X57.
There would be less chance of getting your brass mixed up then if you neck size.
Ass far as ballistics go, the biggest difference is between the head of the shooter, both cartridges are so even that at 500 meters there is only a few foot pounds difference between the two.
I have owned and shot both in the Ruger number 1 and both worked superbly.

I saw brass and ammo actually marked as 275 Rigby at Prophet a couple weeks ago. Very cool to have that! Either would be great in a #1, I think but the 275 would certainly be that much more 'historical'!

Get the 275. I'm willing to bet you'll be the only one on your block with one.

Believe it of not the 7x57 Mauser has more zing to its name for me than the Rigby for the simple fact that it was first and the Brits just changed the name .

Rigby. I think you would have a harder time getting a cooler gun. Really. Super nice round. Super nice rifle.

I think the 275 Rigby's have the express sights, red pad and a 24" barrel.

Interesting bring up the Sharps, this whole deal started with that in mind. I sold one of my Winchester 1885's to get the Sharps (Pedersoli, can't afford the Montana one) then stopped at Wild West to look at the Rolling Block they had, and just about did that. But then came home looked at Prophet's web site again, because I have been wanting a No1 for some time now. And that's what brought me here to ask about the Rigby. Anyway I still have two 1885's(375 H&H and 405 ) so I'm good in the heavy hitters club. I'll be ordering the No 1 in the morning, and you bet I send pictures, if I can figure that out. Thanks for the advise guys.

Can't wait to see what one you choose; love the #1's myself.
Interesting to see Cat here on this thread; I think it was him that got the 303 #1 project going ....

Well to be honest it wasn't all my idea .I was in the middle of a custom Ruger build ( #3 ) in 303 and the #1 idea took off when Clay at Prophet River realized that there was a market for a #1 on 303 so the factory rifle was actually his idea

Gotcha, I had heard something like that but, being a few years ago, had forgotten the details. Love mine in 303!
Still have yours, Cat?

Mine was the last custom built hunting rifle I was going to have done and yes I still have it .
It is my goto rifle for everything - it looks nothing like a factory Ruger however

Mine is a standard ruger from that first run and I'll never let it go. Now for a 275....

So the order is done. Now I'm looking to scope it, here is the deal. I ordered a Skinner sight last year for my No3, but I screwed up and got one for the No1. I just keep it with the idea I'd get a No1. someday. Anyway the way I want to do this is, install the Skinner, then have the quick detached rings with scope. Again thoughts on how this will work? What rings should be used and what scope would you go with? ( I know they say spend xxxx on a scope), but I thinking of a Leupold VX 2,

Also I have to give Clay and Prophet praise again, they gave me the deal that would have been in place this weekend for their appreciation days. (can't go I have a Wedding).

Wish I knew? my rule is never to attend one during hunting season, but "my bride" of 32 years has asked me to go to this one, and once in 32 years I think I can miss one day. Well half, I'll sneak out behind my place in the morning for a grouse hunt. Sorry don't want to derail my own thread, anyone for the scope advise.

Well here it is, if the picture comes through(my first time) Ruger No1 275 Rigby, I'm trying a Leupold VX2 2-7x33. Hoping to hit the range this week.

Truly a pleasure to shoot!
Enjoy your Rigby.

My Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in 7x57 Mauser puts meat in the freezer every year I have owned it.
The Ruger with a barrel stamp with .275 Rigby would be a nice rifle to own, lots of cool and lots of history with each.
Load'er up and go hunting................

I never owned one in my collection from years ago, but it's said that they are the Cadillac of rifles.

They sure look pretty, and built on a proven strong action.

I thought that one day they would add a lower cartrage feed to it, but that would be alot of work taking away from the awesome quality of what the Ruger #1 is.

Looks like you have a mighty fine rifle my friend.

Good times ahead.

Don
