Default letters

Letter sent to Ms. Phillips. Please take the time to compose and send in your letter of support for free hanging snares in Alberta as an effective, humane method of controlling coyotes and wolves.
At the AGM it was announced that Shannon Phillips had about 20 letters opposing free hanging snares, and none in favour.

That's the perception of the ignorant. However, snares have advanced massively from a humaness perspective. Nowadays, the new snares are extremely humane.

Humane except when set illegally on private land
And snare people's pets . I am always intrigued when
I find a set that the landowner knows nothing about .
Those kind of people give trappers a worse name than
they already have . I believe the wave of the future
, if trapping survives , will involve Electronic
Daily trap monitoring. Snares will be in museums .
I spent my whole youth snaring wildlife , now I just
try to keep my Birddogs alive .

When you were snaring in your youth, did you have the proper licensing and permission or we're one of those people that set snares out illegally. The day will come when the bird hunters like you face the same scrutiny as trappers, so don't look for any pity from any of the trappers out there.

No, that person is a criminal. Just as a poacher shooting animals out of season is not a hunter someone setting an illegal snare is not a trapper.

A good friendof mine has a bird dog. He was concerned about snares that might catch his dog. I showed him the cable cutters. He bought a set cost him a whopping total of $25.00 he carrys them on his hip. I'm sure Marty or any trapping store (Halford, trappergords, ata in westlock) can help you out with the cutters. Don't get the cheapest crap at any of the big box stores. I also instructed him when asking for bird hunting permission to ask the landowner if he has ever permitted any coyote trapping. It's not that hard to share the wildlife in this province. If you find illegally set snares remove them. Just a tip I wouldn't run your dog on any land that is owned by fellows in black hats. You may have issues there. Some common sense things to think about.

I am 100%convinced snaring lynx is humane and poses no risk to bird dogs.

Just like coyote snaring is with modernized neck snares. No risk to bird dogs either when done legally.

It sure is especially nice if the bird hunting is done legally as well, no sneaking over the fence, trespassing, that kind of stupidity. I like law abiding bird hunters.

A great thing for those who are concerned about snares, that their dog could have an accident and get into a legally set snare. Simply teach your dog to tie, teach the dog to be able to be tied up on a leash. If he ever gets into a snare, a dog will generally treat the snare as though it is a leash and not fight it.

Once upon a time time, a friend caught a Great Pyrenees dawg in a Ram Powersnare, by the neck and it was no problem, the dawg was sitting there wagging his tail when the trapper showed up and released the dawg unharmed. The dawg was 5 miles from home. It turned out that the dawg was used to being tied up, and once caught, sat there and waited to be untied.

I believe later in life the dawg got shot by a farmer who was sick of the dawg running over to his farm, 5 miles away in the opposite direction from dawg's home.

Irrelevant to the thread but I lost a calf to a snare last week on some land we rent pasture on. We can't check on them daily but get out there at least twice a week. Mother was distressed, calf missing. Found the calf caught by her lower jaw in a snare. She freaked out and ran and I watched her pull her lower jaw off. Must have been caught for a couple of days. I was pretty damn upset but avoided posting anything online that I would later regret.
If you use snares, check them or remove them!!!!!

A modern snare would have allowed the non target to break out and saved your animal.

But ZERO excuse for an irresponsible person snaring out of season. Please report this incident to the authorities, and allow the law to deal with this lawbreaker.

Responsible trappers pick up all their gear at the end of the season. The law abiding trappers of Alberta make no excuse for people who do not respect the law and especially who do not respect the landowners/leaseholders who allow such activities on their lands/leases.

100% agree plus here is another of point of motivation a snare costing me approx 5$ for me to make or purchase a pre made snare at $7 to $10 bucks give or take. Leaving these modern snares in the Bush is not an option. That is gets to be a lot of cash when you start running a few hundred snares. I pick up $5 on the street I'll pick up my $5 snare.

Letters to government Ministers should be kept brief and to the point.
My letter was one paragraph pointing out the availability of snaring courses and workshops. And that snaring, when done properly is a humane way of harvest especially when compared to other methods such as poison.
If the letter is too long, like this post is getting, the point might get missed, so keep it as short as you can. And one more thing, it's important, send a copy to your local MLA, no matter which party. That way it will have twice the impact.
I also CCed ATA President Anne and Ross (ATA education coordinator).
