what would compliment a 30-06
I have a 30-06 that i use for hunting. I don't need another hunting rifle but I want one. Looking for something with a flatter trajectory and with more down range power. 300 is good, but is it that much better.
any suggestions.

i just picked up a .338 win mag i dont think its any flatter shooting actually from what i read it mirror's a 06 pretty close but doe's have more knockdown power
the .300wby mag i believe is flatter shooting with tons of thump (kinda wish i bought that instead)

to get flatter trajectory & and down range power that is much better than 30-06 your going to have to go to a big magnum (belted case)

Id say the .270wsm as well, pushing a lighter bullet like 130's in a premium bullet

My main hunting rifle is a 3006, mainly for deer, and my second one is a 300 win mag, mainly for moose/elk. I've shot a big bull moose with the 3006 with no problem whatsoever and I've shot a couple of deer with the 300 win mag. The 3006 is all that I need but I just like carrying the 300wm for moose/elk.
I think that if you're going to buy a second hunting rifle, bigger is better. Maybe one day you'll be hunting something that you'll wish that you had a more powerful rifle.

338 win mag pushing a 225 at 2900 fps or to mirror the 30-06 use a 250 at 2700 fps...just a lot more Ohmmmph (at both ends mind you)

416 Barrett!
barring that, how about that LazzWarbird thing....
What, a 165gr ttsx at around 3700? that should be pretty flat!
may as well take two steps up if the Venerable AughtSix is getting tired.

get a varmint gun fun to shoot and will get a lot more use than another hunting rifle big magnums are none fun to shoot. you fire a couple shots before hunting season and hope that it still is dead on maybe get to shoot 3 or 4 shots during the season depending on what game I'm hunting hopefully 1 shot each. now a varmint gun is fun to shoot a box full of ammo at the range an tell your self that you got to stay in practice. big magnums are some thing that most do not want to shoot unless their is some thing worth shooting and paper is not even close to be worth shooting a magnum.

To go flatter you need to send the same bullet out the door quicker, so a .300mag of some sort would be the logical jump off point.
To get more more oomph you need a bigger bullet!
If you want to be unusual get an 8x68! 200gr bullet at 2900fps (its a Euro equivalent of the 8mm Rem Mag, predecessor actually, IIRC).
Unless you want to really extend ranges on bigger game i would think something like a 165gr TSX out of an 06 at 2800fps should take care of 99.9% of most hunters needs, so why no step down to something like a .25-06. Its flat, fun to shoot and not too expensive to shoot and perfect for deer size game, sheep etc.

It really depends on what you want to achieve, you have two choices, go lighter or go heavier. Heavier (300 WM and up)will open types of game you can hunt but wil increase recoil and usually weight. Or you could go lighter and be more targed for what you're after such as a 257 wby. A good companion to the 30-06 would be 25-06 or on the other hand a 338 Wm or a 375 Ruger. My two cents

If you bought a 30-06 to go along with that 30-06 you could handle anything in North America and be flexible enough to use it for almost any range with several types of bullets and amazing selection...
See where I'm goin with this?
Whats the big deal about 'flatter' exactly? If you TRULY want 'flatter' then get shooting a 300RUM if it needs to be .30 cal, or get to a 270Wby or similar...but the 30-06 will kill anything as easily and as well.

The 30-06 is so versatile that it didn't make sense to have any other guns in the safe......therefore I sold it.

x2 on the Scope. You already got one of the most versatile cartridges known to man. put some good glass on it or spend the $$ on ammo and hone your shooting skills. m2cw

30-30, its not flatter or more powerful but you've already got all the gun you'll ever need and the 30-30 makes a good alternative in many situations.

The suggestion of a good scope is great. I wouldn't go bigger. I'd go smaller. 25-06, 243, or 22-250. Go get some yotes.

I have no idea what rifle you own, but if it is applicable, upgrade some stuff. Have a good trigger job (or replacement) done, get a nice stock, maybe the scope upgrade as suggested, or invest in some great reloading supplies.
If you are dead set on a new rifle, I would suggest a .243 on one end, and a .338-.375 on the other. A new Hawkeye African in .375 Ruger would be sweet.

A weatherby 30-378 would do the trick quit nicely and won't cost as much as a Lazzoroni rifle.

If I had a really nice 30-06 that I was happy with I would go the other way and get a super nice varmit setup. The 30-06 I had was good for anything I wanted to shoot, I just wasn't happy with the rifle itself.

Thanks everyone for your input.
I agree with you all that the 3006 is a great all around calibre. I have shot many moose, elk and deer with it. There isn't a need for a new rifle it's a want.
I just was getting some input. All of your suggestions where great and I think I have narrowed it down to two.
338 wm
or
325wsm
Just have to see what's around. Left hand bolt action. Being a left hand shooter; the variety in rifles are not what the are for right hand shooters.
Thanks for all your input.
Cheers

Why not get a nearly identical rifle with the same length of action and just buy yourself a smaller caliber. That way you will have a superior varmint rifle, that is easier on the shoulder.
I would take a good look at a 25-06, as it is an outstanding antelope/deer cartridge, can be loaded down for varmint (75 gr. HP @ 3700), loaded up for moose if you didn't wanna take the '06 (120 gr. A-Frame @ 3100). You could have an identical action and similar weighted set up.
Ballistics info: http://www.cpcartridge.com/25-06B.htm
You could go into a magnum, but the '06 is more than enough and if I was content with the '06, then why step up to a 300 win/wsm/rum/saum/wby/h&h/norma? Same pill, more bump. Why not go for a 25-06 or something smaller and cheaper to operate? Or if you really wanted a magnum why not step into something like 375 H&H, or 416 rigby and be ready for zombie dinosaurs.
I also like the 338win, and honestly it is a nice cartridge, but depending on the ranges that you hunt at, a 180gr. pill from the '06 will kill just as well.

270WSM, 7mmSTW, 300WM OR 300RUM, or maybe 338rum, a 340 Weatherby or 30-378 or 33-378 Weatherbys. Better be reloading if you use the Weatherby calibers listed...factory ammo very pricey!! For me I'd go 300RUM with 200gr Accubonds or TTSX's for larger than 30-06. Smaller the 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds get my vote! Very impressive caliber IMO.
As mentioned nothing that your 30-06 cant do, but its ALWAYS good to buy another rifle.
