Question Sheds

Was wondering with the mild winter this year and a few cold snaps if it's too early to be out looking for white tail and muley sheds? Thinking of heading out this coming Saturday

Not in the zones you are asking about, but I've been watching a group of Muleys and 4 bull moose where I am - all still packing.

Default Sheds

I checked my trailcams again this weekend ( central Alberta). All whitetails still packing. I also bumped a bachelor herd of 5 bucks out of a field (seemed strange as it was mid afternoon) and crossed my fingers as they all went jumping over the fence, hoping that one would jar an antler loose! I'll be staying out of that field for another month and then shed hunting it hard, as 2 of those whitetails were " above average" bucks!!

I was out hiking and putting up cams in 248 last Wednesday and didn't find any sheds. Well see what the cams say when I go check them in a week or so.

Never a bad time to go out though. You never know.

The two bucks that live in that fenced area at 23ave and gateway in Edmonton still have their antlers.

with the lack of snow across Alberta the deer are not as stressed and with that i think its safe to say they will hold their antlers a little longer. I don't usually even bother to start looking until march mostly because i don't want to walk the same area numerous times and putting undue stress on the deer in the area.

Go after the feeding areas for now and leave the bedding areas until spring!

Seen 7 bucks still holding in 242 on saturday. Mulies wont even start dropping till end of March. If this year is an indicator of 2015 and 2016. They won't be dropping till end of march-April for whitetails. Sure you might get 1 or 2 before then. But on average they drop late on mild winters we've been having. Plus in 242 we don't even have much snow on the fields. They're not stressed and grazing on the crops we haven't taken off.

Default South facing slope?

was chit chatting with a fellow shed hunter and he said. Most of the sheds he found were on a south facing slope. Have any of you came across this?

Yup. Rarely have a found a shed pointing north. Faciing south west or southeast in the warmth of the sun. They love taking advantage of hillsides facing south because of the lack of snow as well

your probly chomping at the bit to get out, id be careful as to getting into heavy bedding/ traffic areas as not to stir them up...with the light snow load its hard enough locating one let alone two . in heavy snow the deer trails well travelled and you find several in one area or path, in no snow they go willy nilly and makes it that much harder when its 2 miles away.

X2. Not much different than last year except lots more feed out there this year.
Last year was one of the toughest years I've had ever to find fresh sheds and I don't expect it to be any different this year.
