Default Spring bear - less than 60 days

A cure for cabin fever ....
My set up for bait is beaver as the main course and then rolled oats with molasses ... I use a barrel for the oats that has 1 in holes in it and chained up with about 15 ft of slack .. Bears can roll that around for along time and keep comin back for dessert ... I love the 45-70 with 300 gr Vor-tx .. Tree stands are good but will also use ground blinds ... How many more days again ...

do your self a favour and elevate your barrel, measure the bottom of barrel to ground, then you know the size of bear as they walk in, 3 feet space under or 4 ft space under and now they need to stand to get whatever from the barrel and when they reach in, gives you a great shot, on both lungs

I'm itching myself - planning my first black bear hunt this spring. Spot & stalk somewhere close to Calgary probably. Have my eyes on 318 right now. Anyone with a couple pointers would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the tip - although last years harvest report would disagree. Anything better within a couple hours of Calgary?

Gonna be my first year for black bear in Alberta? What WMU's near Calgary would you recommend? Been in 316/412/328/330 but I've only really seen Grizz signs

328 and 330 I am yet to see a grizz track. Just timing I guess.
We actually popped one on private land in Amisk this year.
Go west or north of red deer for black bears and you are getting warm.

I know what you mean ... I have 2 barrels at every site .. the main course is off the ground and strapped to a tree .. because it's over an hour from Red deer to Drayton I can't be there as often as I would like so the barrel with oats works great in keeping them there when the main course runs out .. They roll it around and keep feeding ..

I was talking with my buddy and we were wondering if using a bear bomb considered baiting? It's an attractant. Sprays smell into the air.

good question .. I would think if you're using it in a "no" baiting WMU it might be a problem where as in a baiting zone it should ok .. is it baiting , really don't know ...have wondered that myself ..maybe someone else can say ..

Another question I have is does anybody use a predator call to get bears to come in?

I've never tried but have seen this question before. Most guys who have tried have had no luck. Play on that incredible sense of smell and voracious spring appetite and you'll do well.

To answer your request I will be throwin up my annual bait trading/ ideas thread. While I'm stoked about the season, we are a little ways out to be stockpiling. I'll probably start it the 1st of April so the eager beavers can get started.

So Excited to get going on the spring bear hunt as well!! Teaming up with Wildwoods this year and its going to be EPIC!! We will be hunting the area where i had Leroy Brown last year and setting up a couple more baits in the area to see what else roams the woods.

I would stalk up on non perishables now like grease, popcorn, etc to get those out of the way and secured. Then save the dumpster diving and perishables for closer to the time you actually plan to start filling the bait and hunting. Thats my preference mostly because the excitement gets to me and I cant take it anymore haha Also its so much fun securing the bait for the hunt, Its a hunt in itself and adds to the adventure of it all.

looking forward to the spring bear thread of success and stories!! Good luck to all the bear hunters!

P.S. Wildwoods looking forward to your bait/barter thread it was great last year buddy
