Default Bear Defense

Hi guys,

I got a job as a wrangler in the Northwest Territories and will be hunting for Dall Sheep. I was told to get a bear gun of some sort so I was looking for recommendations. I will be packing it on a horse most of the time.

So far I have looked at the Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70, Defender shotgun?
Is there any need to go bigger than a 45/70... .450 Marlin or .458 win?

If it's just for bear defence, definitely the shotgun. Light and compact and will get the job done if needed.

IMO, the best bet would be to ask the guy that hired you what he recommends.

X2 on the defender. That's what I carried when I was wrangling up there.

Default Bear Gun.

Marlin Guide's gun in 45-70 or 450.

Guide gun -- the flat and skinny profile will ride better in a scabbard.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I agree with the guide gun riding better in the scabbard. I think the Stainless steel version will be worth the few extra bucks.

Yeah, the SS would help -- every sheep season after 2 days of rain I kick myself for not getting a stainless gun.

Congrats on the job and good luck -- oughta be hella fun.
