Default Moose on the Loose in St Albert

Moose on the Loose in St Albert.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...bert-1.4046713

A moose wandering a St. Albert neighbourhood was shot and killed Wednesday morning after charging at a wildlife officer, according to police.

St. Albert RCMP say they were assisting Alberta Fish & Wildlife officers in responding to a complaint of several moose wandering in a residential neighbourhood near Red Willow Park.

Saw the moose today laying down chilling out, have a feeling someone got closer than they should have and provoked a response....unfortunate.

i had family who walked by the moose today before they were shot. They got some pretty sweet photos of them laying on the path minding their own business. They didnt see them get shot.. i wonder what they did with the calves. Did they shoot them as well?

That sure doesn't look like safe operation of a firearm... Pointing in the direction of the camera-person.

That officer is a moron.

Clearly her ears are dropped and he should have backed the hell off. Idiot. Guess they don't teach much in fish and fur school .

Oh no three moose in a a park. Prime time news. Lol I was waiting for the school bus in fort saskatchewan as a youth, moose walked down the street. Whoa.

Luckily it wasn't the big drop tine bull that lives around Campbell park. Still.a damn shame.

They tranq bears and move them, why not a moose protecting her young? Natural instinct. Pretty sure the moose would be happier in the bush then in St.Albert

damn shame

I saw a nice sized bull this past summer along the south east henday where it intersects with the east end of Whitemud drive. Some thing clearly spooked him because he was running frantically towards the double freeway intersection with foliage tangled up in his antlers.

I pulled over to the shoulder to call 911, only to be told by the operator that there wasn't really anything they could do. I let her know that this was off my conscience now, that if someone hit that moose on either of those two freeways it was on her shoulders, not mine. She abruptly changed her tune and said she would send a police car to direct traffic away from the moose if nessecary.

Pic was sent to me by a disgusted AO member that is angry as well of the outcome. These moose look like a nuisance

Reminds me... a friend of a friend... shot a bull moose this year.. that was tranquilized due to a situation like this and relocated.. they put a ear tag on it...which gives you a date it was drugged to let u call in to see if the meat is safe to eat.

That's exactly what I saw this morning on my way to Morinville for work...a bunch of onlookers and bystanders on the bridge/sidewalk taking pictures.

Was saddened to hear they shot the cow.

yeah, but it would only be a matter of time before some dumb dumb tries to pet a calf and gets their arses whooped by mom. Watch the public outcry then.

I'm okay with animals teaching people to be responsible for their actions if no one else is willing to do so.

As am I. But in the end, more moose will likely pay the price and I dare say, more of this would be the result. There's no need of this.

That's too bad they "had to" shoot them. I think tranquilizing would be perfect in a situation like this, it prevents dead moose and the firing of a rifle in a city park. There's plenty of moose around the city and especially Beaumont and Sherwood Park if people let them be they'd probably be fine (the moose and the people).

Sorry folks, when a moose ends up in your lap after you hit it with your honda you will realize, moose and towns do not mix well.

Could have been handled better, F & W could have backed off, closed off the park and let them relax. Then get a bunch of guys in a line and slowly herd them back out to the fields. I wasnt there, the pics do look bad for the F & W.

So if it was your child on the way to school who stumbled on mom moose and she charged and killed them...you'd be okay with that?
Most people are fine with that as long as it is someone else's family member.

From the story I read, that's what they tried but the cow wasn't having it. The calves were moved without incident and will be fine on their own at this age.

Sorry guys I have these critters around all the time, been charged myself, and while it's unfortunate, there's no way they can leave a moose to set up shop in a populated area. Some kid riding his bike comes around a corner and the cow makes him red dirt, or she ends up on top of a car. A moose moving through from one patch bush to another is a different deal altogether.

Wow. don't parents educate their kids to respect wildlife anymore?

Yeah son, feel free to chase that bear cub.

Newfoundland, they figure 150,000 moose on a land mass of just over 110,000 sq km. I've had many close encounters with moose through childhood, ended up in a tree once during rut - but never been injured. Yes, there's accidents but...

I didnt read enough to see they tried that. Darn work. Agree about the dangers of big animals in the public places. Potential for a real problem. I also thought the calf's will do fine and be ready for the winter on their own. Lets hope some who need it, got some good eats due to a unfortunate event.

I do not think the response could be anymore predictable. Also, city folks something something.
Some parents do and some don't. Regardless, it would not have been a child's fault. Also, kids are going to be kids, regardless of what you teach them. Could have been a disabled person too. Or an old fella, or anyone else, for that matter.

Like the guy said, some people are OK with it, as long as it's not their family.

Don't be so naive silver.
With Disney's anthropomorphization of the animal world...and the fact that many city dwellers have now spent absolutely no time in the wild...just how many 6 or 8 year olds really have a grasp of how dangerous wildlife can be.
