30 to 40 yds would be max ... but have had them at 2 yds .. then we get the runners ...when u walk forward or back some will and then the fun begins ..I have taught how to track them .. or do your pushes .. used to do j hook back and get lots too .. we are talking all the time if in bush.. some times they just sit and then u need to find that lane for a clean shot .. Denis saw 4 that were sunning them self's ... just getting out but like I said lots of tracks

Snowshoe. I wasn't really hunting them but they were the only white in the bush in November when I was out and about. Not even fair!

We feed the jackrabbits in the neighbourhood and enjoy watching them outside the window when we're watching tv. They aren't eaters.

Spec. I have to ask if you do anything with the fur of all these rabbits your harvesting? Some of then look like snowshoe hares. I know you have a system to harvest these beautiful and super soft pelts. Right?
Great pics as always.

They all are Snowshoe Hares

I have some fly tiers that want the back feet

the fur is so common that the price is so low most Trapper's ignore them

you also have to be very careful when skinning as the hide rips easy

we have tried to tan and use but it was a mess

the local trapper's use them for Lynx sets

the local Elder's will use them some times in crafts etc

do you use yours?

David

Great pics as always.

Have you got a system to share for harvesting the pelts?
Have you ever tried to properly skin a rabbit?
Have you ever tried to tan a rabbit hide?
Just asking, because from your post, it sure seems like you expect David to be doing it. Right?
Great post as always.

Do they taste different as to shooting them at this time of year versus eating them in the fall before the snow falls. As to fall feed being more grasses, plants than them living on bark, twigs?

We eat wild meat + love Grouse jerky + share with my 3 boys etc

on the rabbits you do the math(Canmore comes too mind)
http://www.gocanmore.com/about-canmore-bunnies.html

here is a read off internet(quote)

In the wild rabbits are not constrained like a domestic herd and breed pretty much right back so long as there is an alpha buck near by. Cottontails typically have litters of 6-10 about 6-7 times a year. Given a 50% mortality rate a breeding pair of rabbits can easily grow to to 50 in just one year. Repeat that for just 2 years and you have over 30000 rabbits provided there is food and shelter enough to support them.

also Alberta Ag... control of rabbits and hares

http://search.alberta.ca/search?q=ra...elds=*&numgm=5

also on the amount of grouse we have got the limit is 5 per day with a 15 limit per license at home .. with partners we saw 223 grouse we have got about 50% over 4 months 15 days.. I have some grouse jerky left

we saw 5 grouse this trip that are closed too hunting and saw tracks of another 10 that we did not see

I am injured so those were spotted from lease roads/trail ..95% were just off the road in the bush

if you know any one on private land that need rabbits taken care of if it is allowed we would charge only 100$ per rabbit a cost saving of 50$ .... ..joking ;;;

Those photos remind me of why I still hunt for ruffed grouse just as you would a deer. Walk-stop-look. Here's a tip: carry binoculars when you hunt for ruffs. Is that object 25 yards away a root sticking up or a bird? You'd be surprised. Great photos.
