Default Otters

Had spotted one in the small creek by my place this spring.

Was wondering why the normally abundant Muskrats were few now........ till I watched an Otter dig up & eat a small Muskrat yesterday.

Also explains why the normally abundant Duck population is down to just a couple seen in the last few weeks.

Googled the River Otter & it says they like Ducks during the molt, as they are easy to catch.

I had thought this spring it was just passing through, as there are little to no fish in the creek.

Flow goes to zero, unless we get lots of rain. It does flow into the Pembina though......

Always surprised to see anything in this creek, as Westlock County releases the lagoon(s) water into this creek (it's why the wife & I call it Pee Creek).

Think winter will kill them off ?

I am amazed by those critters. I cut their tracks in the middle of winter all trapping season out miles from any water source and plowing through the snow. I don't try and target them much but will be keeping my eyes open for a few spots to get a couple again this winter. Fun to catch for sure. Hard to pick the right spot they come through

Is it true if you see Otters, there is fish in the creek? There is a series of dams on a smaller creek in the Wmu i hunt. Old timer native who has a cabin beside said dams, that i have met a few times, said he see's otter in that creek/dam. If true, i would try the spinning rod in that creek/dams one of these summers.

Thanks, sorry for the derail.

Generally YES but not always and they could be scrap type fish rather than "sport" fish. Or they could simply be after muskrats that may be in the drainage.

On my line - yes. But they are often 3-4" stickleback minnows.

20+ years ago , lived near Williams Lake BC.
Was driving logging roads. No tracks.
Next day there was Otter tracks/trail. Followed them maybe 20 miles & never did find it.
They sure can cover ground !

Walked the creek 1-2 miles, each side of my place yesterday.
Didn't see them..... or any Muskrats or Ducks.

They are pretty nocturnal I think. I saw one in front of my cabin a couple years ago one morning in the lake. First one i have ever seen. He swam around and hung out like a beaver would and then went along his way.

I see them in the daylight often. I watched 3 frolick in the water in front of the cabin last weekend. I think they need some light to fish.
