Default 510 Wells Deluxe

So Corlanes put this together for me. I traded a gun for a synthetic 338/378 and pulled the stock and barrel off. I found a Weatherby stock for it on Weatherby.dk and it was shipped up. Recoil pad was replaced as the stock is 20-30 years old. A 23" Bevan king barrel with integral recoil lug, NECG banded front with pop up low light bead. No barrel band or rear sight on barrel. XS sights peep was mounted into a weaver style steel scope base. I have a steel front base but it's not on the gun. I have no intention of using a scope on it at this time. A satin blue and it is complete so far. I would like a drop box mag so it will hold 3 down. I have time as it needs nothing for it to work now. And it weighs in at 9.25lbs with no brake or porting. I have Quality Cartridge brass with the proper headstamp and some 450gr and 535gr loaded with 110 and 115gr of RL15. 118gr was max for a 600gr in the 500 A-square so some interpolation lead me to this load to start. The A2 is only a few grains bigger case. If I live through the testing I will report back. I figure a bench session will never happen so 50 yard offhand will be the rule.

So I shot this beast. It's all I could ever want and more. No need to go bigger. My loads were middle of the road and put a hurtin on my shoulder and my chrony. I got 2427 fps with a 535 Woodleigh. My chrony got blown of the table and bent an arm. I think I will try less speed until I get more used to it. I will offer a free shot for anyone who wants to give it a whirl.

That's one fine looking rifle. Did they glass bed the whole action ? I didn't see any cross bolts or anything on the stock. With that much recoil I would watch for fractures in the wrist area unless they did a solid bedding job.

The stock is from a 460. It has dual crossbolts that are hidden and a pin going through the wrist. The whole action and bbl channel is bedded. The barrel has a recoil lug on the bottom that is integral. I think all has been done to keep the gun together. Now I need to work on the shoulder.

pics of the recoil lug, a 30-06 and the 510, and a 30-06 inside the barrel. The whole thing slides down the barrel. Just in case someone wants something similar, those dies are 299.99.

Methinks you need a launch system-with tracks. My poor old arthritic shoulder just started aching from looking at that monster.

At 14+ lbs I would want it to be a 600 OK. I will never shoot this gun off a bench. I might have been hit hard a few times but I still know better.

Wow that is an awesome looking rifle/cartridge combination! I have not ever heard of the cartridge before but I am going to look it up now and on a side note I'ld say someone is now ready for the zombie bear/lion/elephant/rhino attack.

mmmmm zombie ele!
Not going to Africa any time soon. Just have a love for the big bores. Something about them draws me in. Over the years I have had 4 375's, 1 378, 2 416's, 1 404, 1 460 and now a 510. I still have 2 375's.

well, i gotta say your a better man than I! only two guns that ever bit me with the scope were 375's, one in ruger and an ultramag.
but i was told to hang on, and there may or may not have been a couple 'pops' involved with the 375 ruger, lee

LOL it kicks so hard my other shoulder hurt. No bruises but i'm a little stiff from the first go at her. It takes time to get good at shooting these. It won't kill you but will get your attention.

I haven't seen this rifle but I did see the test target today and a cartridge so I have to say that if your's wieghs 10-11lbs have you considered a recoil reducer in the stock? Just looking at the cartridge made me rub my shoulder.

Turtlewolf

Edit: if I am ever in the Peace I am SO hitting you up to let me pull the trigger, but I may cheat and bring a sand bag for my shoulder .

I'm no expert but I think I discovered, in your last post, why it takes a while to get good with these larger calibers. .

it may not kill you but at that rifles weight it will certainly detach retinas.my calculations with your load and bullet weight show 122 ft lbs of recoil with a 9.5# rifle.

It is much harder to shoot the big bores. You have to squeeze the forarm and pistol grip hard and suck it in to your shoulder and at the same time push it away. Don't forget to breath and then lastly aim. Then shoot the gun. Don't tighten up too much as it hurts worse. Roll with it. Then don't try for a marathon. I would shoot my 460 6-10 shots then put it away cuZ if you drop your guard you will wear it. The 510 I shot 3 first te out. No bruise but stiff the next day.

If you check with real big boar manufactures, they build rifles 13pounds and up. 16pounds and up for rifles of this calliber. H&H will tell you to go to hell if you want a 9pound gun build with this kind of recoil. Just what happens when a quallity manufacure makes a gun that detaches retinas, they don't do it, and your stupid to do so. I shoot rifles in 450nitro had a double gun built in 72cal black powder and they all have wight to them there is a reason for this!!!

Google Bijou Creek guns. That guy is well known in big bore circles and he makes 5.25lb 458 Lotts. A 7lb 500 Jeffery and a 9 lb 600 OK. The 600 without brake makes 250lbs of recoil.
As for being stupid, that's up to me to figure out. All I know is if this gun was 16 lbs I would not own it. If it was over 10 lbs I would not own it. It's not an H&H.
