Default Building a 300 Whisper

does anybody have experience with this round? I am currently loading a 308 win with :
220gr RN sierra
10.7gr of Trailboss
velocity 1050 fps
accuracy is under 1 moa @ 200yds
rifle Tikka t3 tactical 1-11 twist
recoil = 223
noise = 22lr
using this load for brushing up on my skills, i can shoot all day without bothering the neighbors or a sore shoulder

However i want to start shooting 240gr HPBT which will require a 1-8 twist to stabalize at this velocity. With my current 308 win load @ 200yds the bullet is starting to tumble. Im thinking my only option is going to a 300 whisper

how easy is it to obtain a 308 win barrel with a 1-8 twist. Im thinking this is a fairly rare twist rate for a 308 win? i might be better of going this route rather than building a new rifle

Is you stay with 220-210 you can still use a Savage for your project (1:10). Try molly in the bbl and on the bullet. That should allow you to go even lower on the velocity while maintaining consistency. If you want to go to 240, try turning the bullet around. Depending on the bullet used you might be able to get aerodynamic stabilization instead of the gyroscopic one - that will require the faster twist bbl.
I want a Whisper for a while now, but never had the time to do it.

Dusty,
It is easy enough to obtain a 30 caliber barrel with an 8inch twist and chamber it for the 308. With this twist, you do lose a portion of what is really great about the 308 and that is, versatility. I would be inclined to go with a 10 twist. This will allow you to shoot 220 MK's at low velocities and yet still be relatively assured of good performance with more conventional 308 loadings; should you want to shoot them. Leeper

Default 1:8 30 cal barrel

there is a fine smith in pouce coupe that makes a very nice CS or SS 30 cal barrel - 1 in 8. very accurate with the 240 sierra @ 950 fps. makes me smile every time I squeeze off a round.

are you talking about making a 308 cartridge shoot subsonic or the real whisper which is built on the 7mmbr case?

mine is the necked up version of the 221 fireball; 300/221 is the common nomenclature as the 300 whisper designation is a copyrighted term. 6 of one .... half a dozen of the other.
