Default scope for .338 Win Mag

Looking at picking up a scope for a .338 Win Mag. Still haven't decided on a rifle but will be using it for moose and elk in B.C. next fall. I want something I can confidently shoot with up to 500 yards.

Is this scope dependent?

Any advice is appreciated!

Check out the scope thread on here already. I like my VXIII's in 2.5-8, nice scopes in my opinion. When the right deal comes along, I'll probably try a Conquest in 3-9x40 next.

Some guys like more power, but I prefer a more balanced power range. Most of my animals have been well inside 200yds, and 500 is still easy with 8X. Whatever you get make sure you get lots of eye relief once mounted.

I put a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x witht the B&C big game reticle on my 338wm this year and it works perfectly with my 250gr SGK handloads (just over 2700fps). The reticle is soposed to be in yards but with my load it worked out in meters. Zeroed it at 200m and the the 300, 400, and 500 cross hairs all worked out in meters.

I put a VX-II 4x12 40mm AO with Lr duplex on my 338wm this year.

All listed above would be a great choice. For the money, I think the VX2 4-12 with LR duplex gets my vote or a VX2 3-9x40 / 4-12x40 in the duplex reticle would be good also. I have the BC reticle on a few of my rifles - love it and my 243 has the VX2 4-12x40AO LRD - works great.

The 2.5-8x, the perfect scope for 95% of most hunting situations!! I like the 1.5 -5x VXIII on anything bigger than a .338.

Trades I would interested in:
- Sightron rifle scopes, 4.5x14x42mm or 4x16x42mm
especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.

Default Vortex is Best Value

Check out Vortex Viper Scopes before you buy a Bushnell 4200 or a Leupold VX-2.

As good or better glass. All the features and reticles. 30mm tubes $150-200 cheaper once you are talking about the higher end varmint scopes. Easily resettable zero.

Stay away form the Vortex diamondback and Crossfires though. (you get what you pay for.)

also to answer the question, yes long distance shooting is scope dependant. Put a crappy scope on a magnum gun and they are all over the place and you;ll wonder why you can't shoot worth a darn.

spend at least $500. minimum.

imo.

The Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 with 4" of constant eye relief is a great choice.
