I saw one today, in a flock of 300 Canadas near High River.

We saw 10-12 white geese west of Ft McLeod on our way to Lethbridge last Friday. In a good size flock of Canadas. Could have been 'locals"

The lakes in Alberta are still frozen over. They won't show up until there open. With the forecast for cold temps this weekend it's not going to thaw anytime soon. And being so late in the season they won't be stopping long on there way north.

Was heading to Outlook, Sask for hunt next weekend, guessing I'm better off staying home?

We got a couple Friday, but when we went back out Saturday they were nowhere to be found. 2500-3000 birds

Default Snows

If you look up a site called hunt the north, they update the migration weekly state by state right up into saskatchewan. The last report said they were just starting to show up in the southern part of North Dakota. I chase them a lot in the fall and spring. Itll be a couple weeks yet for sure unless it warms a lot. They will quite often not be sitting on the lakes when they come in to start, more in the floodwater in fields.

A lot of our Alberta snows come from the Western Artic Population, many of which winter from Southern Oregon down through California into Mexico,,, so we aren't totally dependent on conditions first improving in the Dakotas for snows to arrive here.

That said, there is a lot of winter between us (particularly for those of us here in central Alberta) and the bulk of the snow goose migration from whatever population they come from. There is still a pretty good chunk of snow in Idaho and Montana yet as well as southern Alberta with quite a bit more forecast for the weekend for these areas.

Check out this current snow cover map: http://www.eldoradocountyweather.com/snowdepth.html

And yes,,, when the birds do finally get here, they will likely be quickly hopscotching through using sheetwater in the very wet muddy fields making predicting the "X" difficult,,, and getting out into the field to set up a spread physically demanding if not impossible in some cases.

In these conditions to kill some snows, the best bests may be pass / jump shooting,,, or running traffic with water spreads in pastures.

Welcome to completely unpredictable world of spring snow goose hunting!!!

Where abouts was that?

Corn stubble under pivots? Taber, Lethbridge country I guess?

Well,,, sights like that always get the heart pumping,,, and with all that standing water in the field, getting out there and setting up a spread would certainly be a major cardio workout!!!!!
