walleye ate what???
So I went yesterday to Red Deer River and despite rain and freaking 35km /hr wind managed to catch nice 4 lbs walleye ( and a cold as well).
Anyway, when I was cleaning it something black and furry drop out of his stomach.... at first I thought it was bunch of weeds and some fish but upon closer look it actually was a decent size ( about 6 inch ) partially digested rodent. Anybody want to play forensic rodent expert and tell me what it is  ?

Now that got me thinking  .. I have bunch of frozen mice for my reptiles in a freezer, maybe should take couple for next fishing trip and see what happens . Regulations does not say anything about fishing with mice as a bait...I bet it will stay on hook better then smelt or minnow.

By the length of the tail (in the event that it is indeed the original length), I'd say maybe a pocket-gopher.

i've caught big browns before using a mouse imitation fly so this doesn't surprise me. Cool find.

Exactly! I once found baby duckling inside the pike so nothing would surprise me about pike, but to find this in walleye was very unexpected.

I caught a walleye that had a 5" rib bone in its throat this summer at crawling.

not trying to be a troll at all and i seriously hope its not taken this way but can you keep walleye out of the river if you have tags?

No, there are no tags specific to the Red Deer River....or any river for that matter.

Careful, questioning a picture is dangerous business. God forbid an upstanding outdoorsman were to question a potential poaching act, caught in the act.

I have kept a couple walleye out of the SSR, dont need tags, its general regs. plus I like to glow in the dark, dont need to turn on the bathroom light at night

Was surprised to see that this year burbot limit went down from 10 to 2. Kind of extreme difference I must say. Not that I ever caught 10 in Red Deer River but still interesting move.

I did. Tasted awesome, even my 8 year old who usually hates fish had some. But I must admit I gave those fillets 4 x more rinse then usual, lol

It was about 6 inches as I mentioned in OP. I don't think it is a mole... moles have way different looking feet and muzzle.
I looked at all the pictures of Alberta rodents and I am leaning towards water vole. Would make most sense - why would any other kind of rodents swim in cold river during the fall?
