Default Alberta Buffalo

Anyone know the numbers of the Zama herd? Or if they are planning to open tags this year for this hunt?

I値l bet a dollar that hunt will never be opened again no matter how big the herd gets to be.

Default BC Bound?

I understood the entire herd buggered off to BC and has not returned yet. We did the trip in 2015, probably the weirdest hunt I've ever been on. Our bull absolutely reeked when I walked up to him, mighty fine on the grill though.

What a mountain of guts though

Dependent on this winter's survey numbers, if the population remains stable to increasing, and if the management plan is followed, expect a licensed draw hunt this year.

My Baby Brother who will be 57 on Saturday was drawn back then (Big Zeke).

Out of 10,500ish applicants about 120 drawn. This is a pure lottery. No priority points year to year, like that would matter anyway.

But seeing that country way up north is an eye opener. The bull we tagged was big, but not by far the biggest one we saw.

It still was a very very big animal to deal with though!!!

What is more interesting is the discovery that there are more herds that are disease free outside Wood Buffalo Park. Maybe some day we will see huntable herds in other areas!!!

Perhaps some of the Zama herd should be moved over to say, from north of Slave Lake to Wabasca. Huge country up there and the Bison would thrive.

I suppose it is possible. I drew a tag in 2013 and a cousin did also. There were 100 tags given out that year, and due to too many females being taken there were no tags in 2014, and possibly beyond that. It was an adventure no doubt, but I think if the herd dynamics and harvest strategy is followed they will continue to give out some amount of tags.

Here are some numbers to show the current growth trend surpassing the threshold to hold the hunt.
