bear hides
I was thinking about going out for a spring bear but i already have a bear rug and don't want another and im pretty sure you have to use the cape but not sure about the meat? Its been a while since i have hunted bear and was looking for a refresher on the regs. If i don't have to use the meat and just have to take the cape is there somewhere where i can donate the cape so that it can be used?

You should be able to give it to a taxidermist. They will then use it to repair botched caping jobs. Check with your taxidermist to see if he could use one. Or get a nice shoulder mount done

Outdoors sportsman ?????
Are you going to kill one just for fun of killing it ? Consider going with a camera if you have no use for the animal. You can shoot the same one several times. It`s like catch and release. If the bear is a problem animal that is one thing, but if the bear is out in the wilderness where they belong, I would not kill if I had no use for the animal.

If you have no interest in the meat and no intrest in the hide, why would you go and hunt one to just kill it?? If you just want to kill things think about shooting prairie dogs.

If you are hunting on a license, you will have to find a use for the meat OR the hide. The regs do not allow you to just shoot one and leave everything. But you do have the option of hunting for either the hide OR the meat, or both if you like.
Problem Bears are another matter. If you can locate a land owner with bear problems you may get permission to hunt that, or any number of bears, on his land, with his permission. In that case you will not need a license and you will not be required to salvage the meat OR the hide. You may if you want, but it's not required.
Just for clarity sake, bear problems are typically, but not always, a late summer/fall thing. Your chances of finding someone with Bear problems in the spring, are not good.

Can you provide the source of this legal advice? Last I checked it was ilegal to waste the skin of a bear taken under the authority of a license. I might be missing an exception to that rule that I am not aware of.

What about shooting one for a skull on your mantel and a tanned hide on the wall. Or donate the hide to halford or give it to someone. Who cares if he holds a tag and shoots one legally. I don't plan on eating the meat and I will bleach the skull and tan the hide. Am I a bad sportsman? I don't want to shoot one with a camera, I want a big bruin laying beside my bow. Sounds like theres a linching mob on here ready for bear hunters who don't make delicious spring bear roasts. Please keep your high and almighty comments to yourself, this guy is doing nothing wrong!!!!!!!!
Oh forgot to add the only thing that can't go to waste on a bear is the hide.

I have not said any high and mighty comments. Myself I consider bear as a trophy hunt and cant wait for the day I put a monster boar on the ground, but guess what Ill be bleaching the skull and putting the hide on the wall. I will also be cutting a roast out as I have never had bear before so gotta try it. What i gathered from the OP is he just wants to shoot er kill one, take a pic or two and walk away. So if hes not keeping meat, or fur, or skull (assuming) why kill one??

x2 .. It's not like there is a shortage of them .I'm sure the OP would do something with the hide , he just was asking a question regarding the whole carcass .. Nothing wrong with wanting to get out and hunt again . I've taken some nice bears as well and don't really " need " another rug but I plan on going again this spring .Good luck to you , bchap22..

You can leave the meat but you have to take the hide. Tanning is pretty cheap so if your taxi wont take it you can spend a few hundred tanning it and give it away.
I love hunting bears but have a giant black and a couple big browns rugged so i doubt i will ever mount another.I have a few people who would like hides so im going to try to kill two big archery bears this spring.Ive shot 15-20 bears and 3/4 of them have been given away. The areas i hunt all have huge bear populations and imo they need to be managed the same as any other predator.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Seems pretty clear to me what you were asking... I would have gone bear hunting years ago if I knew "not letting the hide go to waste" could be interpreted as donating it to someone else. I am going for the first time this Spring and plan on putting the hide on my classroom wall.
Taking photos doesn't even come close to pulling a trigger. I'll take plenty of pictures once the animal is laying on the ground though, haha.
Good luck and have fun just enjoying the outdoors!

Sorry about answering late. Am gone alot. I also hunt bears. My family all eat bear. We smoke the hind, tenderloins are done up to be stuffed and barbecued, meat that is left is split between hamburger, pepperoni and jerky. Also have a rug. Same thing is that do not want the hide only the skull for the mantel. We did the claws up for necklaces for my youngest daughter. All that we did not use was the hide that is in the freezer.

Can always do a head mount. Looks good, doesn't take much space and not that expensive.
