Alberta Hogs
Thought I may start a thread of hog sightings/ sucessful hunts.
I went out today to some crown/farmland by Barrhead and almost shot a hog. A momma weighing about 200kg ran out with 4 little porkers. I was expecting something to pop out looking like a European hog, but these were light coloured and the momma was dark brown. I set up cameras to see if they come back to the area I saw them and I will come back next week.
I know a few were shot in Lac Ste. Anne county, Barrhead, Mayerthorp area and by Fort Saskatchewan.
Any tips how to hunt them? I don't think stalking them will be fruitful.

I'm no expert but if you know they are in a given area, use an electronic caller using "piglet in distress" sounds. Ground blind/tree stand?

That may be a good idea. I will jus tuse my e-caller for geese haha. If that hog hunt is what it seems like, that is very cheap I would say.

There are some north along the river and also on some of the grazing lease area near mentioned town. I figure you must have found the hidy hole there lol Not many know about them. The ones by the river the guy won't let you hunt his property so they are a bit tough to find there.

Haha, sorry Gloszz I had to.
He's alive in the picture, that's my boar. He's even bigger now.
From what I have been told the feral hogs can really vary in looks and breed. Hope you get some pictures on your camera to post.
Always wanted to try hunting the wild ones.

Spot, get permission and catch them out feeding just before dark. Is what my friend did. Got a mama and 1 of her piglets. So tasty. This is a few years back N of Sangudo. Problem is they move like Elk, seen one week, don't see them there again.

My tip: Check your back track if hunting from the ground. I don't think I would hunt boar from the ground. At close quarters it could get exciting pretty quick.

We have taken three from the ground, got into a whirlwind of a sheetshow last year close quarters with pigs running by in thick crap...bloody fun and gets the heart pumping...590 with the first two out the pipe are slugs then buck shot...I have had a pig down just to have a bunch come back to check on thier buddy thick Tamaracs so we backed out for 30 minutes then claimed our price...

Just an update. Seems ole the hogs we found were just luck. Lots of locals and rappers we talked to that live in the area said they are more elusive than elk. Our bait site that we left last week was untouched and no proof they exist on camera. Looks like we will have to wait 2 more weeks an so check again. I assume they were just passing by when we found them and their range is over 500 acres.

You are probably looking in the wrong spot if you had to talk to the local rappers for leads

500 acres is not a very big piece of land. It is under 1 Square Mile. It's only slightly larger than three quarters of a section........
Or did you mean 5000

Yea missed a zero on my phone. The area we were on and wandered around on is close to 33,000 acres. So I am now thinking they must have a greater range than that!

33,000 acres adds a whole new concept to finding them again......
Good Luck in your quest.......They are quick little buggers in the wild.
