Caliber for moose and deer

I have a question for everyone, this year is the first year I have got a moose tag for alberta (from newfoundland originally ) killed many moose back home and I use my 300wsm, for deer hunting here in Alberta last year I used my 243 and loved it, I think it's perfect for deer. But since I have a moose tag this year and I will be buying a deer tag I am wondering what you guys think I should use for a gun that would kill both, I don't want to use something too big for the deer but I don't want to use something too small for moose, listed below are the calibers I own let me know what you think would be the best for both:

30-30
7.62x54r
308
270
30-06
300wsm
7mm rem mag
45-70

Any one of them. I'd lean towards the 270 or 308

The first three are definitely out. .308, .270, 30-06 are great choices as are the last three.
my experience is .308, .270 and the 30-06 in that order.

My preference is .308, accuate, easy to reload, non magnum recoil, and has taken a fair number of fine moose steaks over the years.

45-70 is fun too, but i found the range limit a bit short for some of the area i hunt. Smacks them down hard.

30-30 has done the job too, but i felt a bit under gunned.
was a one shot kill non the less.

The 308 is a good caliber and I would think about useing it but I don't really like the rifle I have its a remington mohawk 600, if I could sell or trade that rifle I would consider useing the 308 it would more then likely end up being my choise

yes thats the ticket! very good choice has a very high sectional density and ballistic coefficient.
Speer lists their 150 BTSP as .489 co efficient and a sectional density of.279
what velocity are you pushing that caliber to?

7mm rem mag! 150g winchester power points. Have killed everything from coyote to moose/elk

Trooper I don't reload for the 270 yet I only reload for 308 and 223, but I do have some barns triple x 130 gr bullets I was going to try in the 270

I use the 7mm Remington Mag, mostly because I might have to take a long shot and I want that extra hitting power at distance. However, if you're using one with a composite stock (ie, quite light), it's a beast to shoot with a lot of kick. A few guys that have tried it were very surprised.

My hunting buddy uses a .270 and it's so much easier to shoot - quieter, way less recoil, etc - so it comes down to how well you handle recoil.

In the end, with good shot placement, virtually all of those choices will work. 45-70 is probably a bit over the top and a .243 is perhaps a bit light but again, if you can shoot, they'll all do the job.

So, how well do you shoot?

My 300wsm is my main gun and I don't mean to blow my own horn but I shoot it quite well I'm just worried it's over kill for deer, my 270 would be my second choise or my 308. But I don't really like the 308 rifle I have right now it's a remington mohawk 600 if I could sell or trade that rifle for another 308 then the 308 would be higher on the my list or guns I would use

shot the caliber of gun you shoot the best being accurate is more important then the caliber you choose shot placement over caliber

i say 7mm rem mag. you can get 130gr for deer and up to 180 for moose in factory loads.

ill be using the 139gr hornady gmx superformance this fall for deer, and maybe an elk

'REAL' men (like me ) use 30-06 & 45-70 exclusively.

there are lots of guys who use bigger guns than that.

No I'm not but I could always buy a new rifle, the calibers listed are all guns I own

Those who own every caliber under the sun including the .444 Marlin would say .444 Marlin with 265gr FP for hunting in brush.

Lotsa guys have killed moose with the .243Win.
Lotsa deer get shot with .300 WSM's.

I would lean more towards the later, but that's just me.

If you used your 300wsm before why would you want to use something else,the 7mm or the 270 would be my next choice,but if you know your 300wsm go with what you know that works well for you.

The 308 would be my last choice,not that it won't do the job,all your calibers will kill moose and my top choice hands down would be the 7mm for many reasons. The only 2 guns I would own of that group would be the 270 and the 7mm.I have had my 3030 decades and it's a great gun if your in real tight bush with close shots and light to carry ,with open sights.

Any one of the cartridges listed will do fine. I would go with the rifle you are most comfortable/accurate with.

Depending on what terrain you're hunting-more bush/closer shots I'd go with the 30-06. Large cutblocks/farmland I'd go with the 7mm for the reach. Quality bullets in either will penetrate well on the moose and you'll have less meat damage on the deer.....

What I normally tell people is to see what your hunting buddies are shooting. It is sometimes nice to not only have their input but also to have the ability to "borrow" ammo if you pull a stupid and either loose or forget yours. You have no idea how many times I have been out and people have asked me if I have any ammo they can borrow!

Any of the cartridges you listed will be fine as long as you can shoot them accurately .
