Default Transfer of ownership for boat

Had an aluminum boat given to me, comes with a trailer and everything.

What kind of paperwork do I require to take ownership? Will a handwritten BoS with the VIN of the trailer and Registration Number of the boat suffice?

Thanks.

Hey Joe, for some reason I think that trailer plates stay with the trailer and not the person. The seller signs the registration slip and you take that to registry to transfer to you. I am pretty sure that is what I did when I sold my boat a few years ago.

Sorry I am pretty sure you are incorrect... I’ve bought and sold a lot of trailers lately, more than my wife is happy with anyway. I’ve been given the plate and pink cards from the previous owner and motor vehicles said that a trailer plate stays with the original owner only or it’s a dust collector... I have a few.

A simple bill of sale hand written, or downloaded from the government website should suffice... I used two bill of sales for my last boat (a separate one for the trailer) and made copies of both for the previous owner to have. Just include motor, trailer and boat serial number on it and your golden.

Btw, boat registration numbers now stay with the boat for life throughout Canada, I have Ontario numbers on the side of my boat under my name living here in Alberta

Good info thank you, I would not have thought to include the motor serial number.

Id suggest going to a registry and get the correct answer. There are a couple ways plates or not can be handled.

The registry will register your trailer and ask if you have a trailer plate and vin number for it. Of course the plate already registered in your name. If not, you have to purchase and is yours for life to use. Do not believe they will do your boat. I had to go to Harry Hays building in Calgary to register my boat. That was about 9 years ago. Things might have changed since then. Call a registry and ask

I would never sell a plate with a trailer. If they get a photo ticket, you will pay for it if it doesn’t get transferred. Plate is good for life so never sell with trailer. Can always transfer to your next one.

Default Boat

Did my Canadian boat transfer by mail to Atlantic Canada. Boats are Federal, not provincial registration. That was the only way I was told. I think I found the forms online. Boat only needs registration if 10 hp or greater.

PM me if you need more info.

It has registration numbers on the side. Found a form online to fill in and I believe if the info I found was correct I take it down to Service Canada with my bill of sale.

It's a 15 foot Starcraft with 60 HP motor and a trolling motor.

X 2....I did mine on line. Easy...

Remember as well on your purchase and insurance, you need 3 bills of sale:
- one for the trailer as it has a serial number
- one for the motor A/A
- one for the boat A/A

Good luck,
