good quality gun
First thing is to check is if the barrels are Damascus or good for smokeless ,then if it has 2 9/16" or 2 3/4" chambers.

They were universally very well made guns. You got a great shotgun no matter date of manufacture. Depending on condition it should make a great hunting gun, or at least well worth getting it fixed to use. If the barrels are Damascus you will want to get it checked closely, and it will be a hand load, low pressure gun only, if the barrels are still in good shape. Personally, I don't have the stones for shooting Damascus but there are lots of guys that do. For me, they still make nice pieces to admire though. Congratulations on the new gun.

L C Smith shotguns have one significant weakness.
The butt stock, where it holds the locks, and joins to the action is very thin, and prone to cracking. They benefit from glass bedding the head of the butt, by a competent shotgun smith.
I recommend that you have the gun examined for it's safety, and for the condition of the stock.

I have this same 16 gauge in the field grade made in the year 1901...fully restored and doesn’t get out of the safe too often.
