Favorite minnow pattern?
If you could only have 1 minnow pattern to use on lakes and ponds, what would that be? Thanks for the input.

I don't always fish minnow patterns in stillwater,
but when I do it's on of these:

I haven't thought of a name for it... but walleye seem to like it.
I've got a buddy who's a trophy fly fisher (big *** pike and bull trout is his game), I want to see how this performs alongside his clousers & deceivers.
only one way to find out!
FYI from overwing to bottom the materials are:
Holo fusion fiber
2 colours of craft fur
UV ice dub.

What I'm looking for is an imitation of a small minnow for rainbows. Something to imitate a stickleback. In the lake I usually fish, the trout feed very heavily on these.

maybe a barbell leech or synthetic clouser minnow of the appropriate size and color?
or a small, olive muddler minnow?

The top fly is a Glenn's leech from Phil Rowley's book. The fur strip it brown dyed mink rather than rabbit
Or this one tied with marabou. The back it toughened up with some UV set Resin.
Both hooks are # 8 or 10 C67s.

That bottom one looks like a winner Don. I wish I could tie. Is that a fly that can be purchased somewhere?

They are very nice flys but the actual hooks must be factory seconds or something because the barbs are broken off.

Trigger...
The bottom fly is not really tied to an established set pattern and have not been vetted by the FF community so they are not available in any angling shop. You need some, send me an email. Got some free time waiting on rod guides. The top fly is a derivative of the Glenn's Leech.
And Lannie, these flies are used and were tied before the Govt decide it would demonstrate yet again it's incompetence with regards to fishing regs. What really should scare us - if they can't get a simple thing like a fishing reg. right, how in the devil would they run a country?
Regards,
Don

A size 12 1x or 2x long shank rolled muddler was the go to stickleback imitation for sea run cutthroat on the coast.
Key is to tie a small head, visible red for gills and a very sparse amount of hair left for the body (think 10-15 hairs). Will admit that I have not fished this fly for rainbows, but it is an excellent fly for cuttys.

I've had some success with a pattern I tied a couple years ago based on Ian Colin James minnow pattern.
minnow pattern 1 2010.jpg
After tying a few of these my goal was to get them a little thinner. I've also tried variations on color and materials with similar results. After picking up a small motorized spinner for epoxy flies it seems to help with the sagging. Sorry no photos of recent ties of this pattern.
The best results with this pattern have been on a floating line with 9 ft leader, a very slow retrieve or a strike indicator, working the shallows and shore line after ice out and in the late Fall, once the boatman and backswimmers are done.

Hey Don, just wondering, do the dumb bell eyes make this fly ride with the hook up?

The minnow pattern above is so good that other minnows try to breed it and end up caught.

I wrap the body with super thin lead or just use splitshot made for flyfishing.
I tie that pattern with a bead also, this one posted here is made for shallow water

Fisher....
When I retrieved the fly I was shocked to see the minnow impaled. I was really uncomfortable as I was fishing a bait banned lake.
But the upside, the fly was so good, it was seen as horny.
That adds to the list of insects, birds + the occasional fish that show up in the end of my
line.
