Where to re-certify 20lb Propane tanks in Calgary?
Discovered tonight that all 3 of my BBQ tanks are past due.
Trying to decide whether to try to get them re-certified or just buy new.
Anyone know a place and costs?

I found it easier to just exchange my old one for a new certified one already filled with propane.

I am looking at that as well for my RV 30 pounders are approaching 10 years. I have been told about Canwest on 52 Street SE off Glenmore but looking on internet it could be 76 Ave at 52 St. Know more this week as far as costs for we need these filled prior to leaving for elk on the 20th.

I got a new 20lb tank for 19.99 at Costco last week....not worth the time for me to recertify.

When it comes to 20lb propane tanks, that's ^ usually the least expensive route to go. Because 20lb tanks are the most popular by far, they are also the cheapest to buy new (or exchange), thanks to economies of scale.
However, if you have propane tanks that are larger (or smaller) than the 20lb size, it can often be cheaper to get them re-certified, because they are not as popular and are more expensive to buy new.
For what it's worth, the last time I had a propane tank re-certified, I took it to Superior Propane in Calgary ... http://www.superiorpropane.com/
Hope that helps,
Mac

A lot of places have the exchange racks now.
$23.99 full, and they changed their policy just recently, your traded in tanks no longer need to have a less than 10 yr old stamp. They change the valves and pressure check them.
Only draw back to that is you get a new valved full 20 lb tank with a pretty yellow / green plastic wrapper, but the stamps on those bottles may be older than 10 yrs, meaning you will be stuck returning to the exchange places as other fill places may still be checking for <10 yr stamped bottles.
I traded in three 20 pounders last week, a 2012 and two 2005's, I got back a 2000, a 2002 and a 2009 bottle.

I find it a bit goofy that I can pipe an entire propane storage facility, pipe buildings for natural gas as well as install & repair all manner of propane and natural gas appliances, but I can't recertify my own blasted cylinders; for that I need a kid who took a course at the gas station to do it

Can you get a valve with a dip tube and spitter these days? I have a 5lber I would love to have a spitter on and it is due for a re-cert.

My ex-father-in-law took me to a old gas station for a propane fill south of Creston BC that was native-run.
No weigh scale- The guy hooked us up and went to do some other stuff. I looked at my FIL who grinned and said- "It's an old pump-it will stall when the bottle is full"
Sure enough-once it started to labor the guy sauntered over and unhooked us.
That 20lb-er lasted me the rest of the summer. SAFE!!!!

Fill N Go Gas on Edmonton Trail. Probably one of the cheapest in town. They have new/used certified tanks.

Calgary Dave
I saw tanks in NE Costco for $50 a month or so ago but was in the south store last week and asked and was told they were seasonal and probably all gone. I just assumed for $50 they were empty and I would need to spend $30 on top of that to fill them?

Was @ Canwest in July and was told it is not worth while to recertify 20lb bottles any more. They will sell you a replacement for less than re-certifying an older one.
If the company you work at uses Canwest to fill bottles for your employer I mention it and get the company discount by paying cash. That makes for a good deal when doing the 30lb bottles for the 5th wheel.

And then they just install a new valve and say good, 36.00 please.

If the tanks require recertification, a simple metal number stamp set will do the trick. Just punch the rim with an expiry date and you are good to go. A lot of reputable places have been known to do this, and charge out a new valve. I DO NOT by any means condone the practice, but I have seen it done.

I tried the exchange at our local co-op. The only time I exchange is when I have a totally empty tank or you loose the remainder (I like my tanks full when I head into the bush for a week). Just filled 2x20lb and 2x30lb tanks at Costco a few weeks ago, less than $50 total bill. Up north, it cost my buddy $80 for 2 30lb. Last re-valves I had done ran around $18 for 20lb, so better off buying shiny new tanks.
