Default Barrel liner

Looking at relining a 22LR bolt to .17H2, where in Alberta to buy liner or make? Reliable in Vancouver will ship- just looking for semi local is all. Edmonton area if possible.

I am unfamiliar with barrel liners ... understand it requires the bore to be opened up, the liner installed, chambered and crowned. I assume cost is not the issue, but that you are looking to chamber the 17H2? I suspect few gunsmiths will have the reamer.

Default Barrel Liner

There is a gentleman in Thorsby, AB who used to install barrel liners in 22's that had a shot out/rusted barrel. Not sure if he would do 17's.

Sorry but I don't remember his name at this time. Someone else may be able to provide his name.

Good Luck,
Phil

Brownells sells them.
The best way is to remove the barrel from the receiver and then drill the existing barrel out on the lathe using a special drill . The drilling process takes about a hour. The liner has to be chamber and glued into the old barrel setting the headspace properly. An extractor and feed cuts need to be made . Depending on how thing go the job is usually 2-4 hours

What .22 are you doing this to? I would just buy a rifle in that cal. 17 mach2 is a great little hunting caliber, for small game.

Sounds like, a lot of work needs to be done, and that sounds like money, I would just buy a new gun.

The guy you're thinking of is Roy at R&T Firearms in Warburg I believe, I get him to to work for me all the time and its top notch.

I agree. On top of that HM2 ammo is getting hard to find and expensive. HMR is a far better choice. I sold my LH hm2 specifically because of ammo price and shortage of supply.

Roy Gruniweer in Warburg just Parkerized two 22s of mine- this one included. Its a Mauser/MAS 45- completely restocked and more. Trouble was for five years it was stored incorrectly in Yellowknife with resulting frost pitted bore. In my mind as a buyer- even if the gun is a tack driver the bore renders it worthless- I would love 22 mag or 17 wsm but the 17h2 is fully functional with the clip and... interesting- I am only worried about availability down the road, centerfire is much easier to deal with rare cases. Roy can do 22, Ron of RKS can do 22 (makes his own liners-will ask about 17), Jason at Gunco Nepean, Jury in red Deer ($450 just for the liner) and Sorenson in BC can do 17 in 17h2- its just the shipping I want to pare out. Reliable liner $89, Bits an Pieces $95, nine35 can get liners. I know Brownells- but haven't ordered in decades- don't know about crossing the border. Looks like Redman is the only brand- TJ goes down to 22. I also want an install that is incognito.

I finally got out of 17mach2 this summer, because a fellow wanted my rifle and ammunition, and offered me much more than I had invested. With the 16k rounds of Eley loads he bought from me, he had 29k rounds.

When I sold mine I had about 10K rounds, which is about 2 years supply. Problem with trying to stockpile HM2 is the cases deteriorate and split after 4 or 5 years so it doesn't have great shelf life like 22 RF or CF ammo does.

Was reading the split cases were more to do with chamber tolerances- and was/is a problem from day one especially with auto loaders.

You are free to believe whatever you like, not trying to tell you what to do. I can tell you I had some six year old HM2 where some had splits in the cases before being fired and the rest split on being fired. This was in a bolt action that I never had any split cases in outside of that old Hornady ammo.

Eley stopped producing 17mach2 ammunition ten years ago, so all of my ammunition is that old, and no issues with splitting.
