Cool fur for frontiers hat

AO members i have recently had a buckskin coat made and now im gunna get a fronteirs hat made. Just wandering if anyone here has had a fur hat of any kind done before and the pro and cons to the different furs used. I was wandering maybe a artic fox maybe or a red fox , asked the leather people that did my buckskin and they said that coyote was to big and fluffy looking , need something finner and less bulkier looking. Any suggestions would be apprecated

How about beaver, marten, or snowshoe hare?

I picked up a fur hat when in Whitehorse a few years ago. The fur is muskrat. Short and really warm. I have had the hat for 7 or 8 years now and the fur is starting to wear off on the very back along the folded edge, but thats it for wear.
Just my 2 cents worth.

They were right....I had one made and coyote is too big and bushy. The one I wear now is muskrat.

Thank you for the most generous offer! However, I for one will have to take a pass!

PS My vote goes to the muskrat also

Any good quality fur will do. Another thing to keep an eye on is the lining used - get something that breathes, not a sweat/moisture retainer.

Do yourself a favour and drop into the Alberta Trappers Association headquarters in Westlock, they have all the stuff you are looking for.
FWIW, I've been wearing fur hats all my life when it is cold.
I prefer beaver because it is so tuogh, but muskrat is a "lighter" fur as to weight and fine tecture.
Coyote makes a very good and tough hat for longhair fur, and mine is now 26 years old!!
I wear it only for cold weather boating or hunting however, as it is very ratty now!

I like muskrat as well - in the RCMP style. I've got a nice native tanned one with some good beadwork on the front.

Just watch that the lining isn't too slippery (like the lining of a sportsjacket) or you'll have a tough time keeping it on your head!

Thumbs up some good replys here

hey thanks for some thoughts here guys, beaver seems to be talked about here alot, i'll have to check into it. Also anyone got a purfered breathable lining-pros and cons? I know with my buckskin suit i went with a biker, bomer lining and its good in a coat. But maybe i'll take catnthehats advice and just go into a fur place and see what they have , i was kind of thinking of something i could shoot myself just to add to the hats story here. Anyways tks guys greatly appreciated.
