Already got a folding saw that fits in my pack, and checking shooting lanes are second nature to me because I do a lot of stand hunting from improvised blinds.
A bit confused about " starting with the far end of the platform pointing up but I'm sure that will become apparent soon.

Basically you want to start with the foot platform on a bit of an angle, so the outer edge is higher than the edge that's biting into the tree.

The idea is that when you get to your target height, the platform will be level because of the change in angle of the tree trunk, and the narrowing of the tree trunk. When you are up in the tree, you really can't (shouldn't try) to adjust it.

You kind of have to guesstimate how much of an angle to use. With practice you get better at it!

There's a few pictures of the technique on page 37 of this manual:

These are worth getting,
you can make an adjustable linesman’s belt for goin’ up ‘n down. They’re way nicer than a Prussic knot. I still use a prussic on my safety rope if I leave it in the tree.

I have a lineman's belt and a 4 point harness, but am not crazy about using the lineman's belt for fall prevention or arrest because of the location of the anchor rings- they are made for climbing not fall arrest.
I'll likely use the 4 point because it is what I have been familiar with for 30+ years of using them in an of industrial setting

I used to use a linesman’s harness for years, too heavy and noisy for my tastes....mostly it’s the weight, I did feel totally safe in it though.

Now I use a small rock climbing Harness and use it to prevent falls rather than (hopefully never!) arresting them. I need to be a bit more diligent, no more sleeping in the stand any time I want... I need to plan a snooze and make sure the harness is tied off high enough to keep me right in the chair. I can lean into the rope and nod off for a minute or two.

Another thing... it’s been mentioned before but beware frozen poplar bark.
It’s worth repeating, man that stuff is slick sometimes.

http://treewalkertreestands.com/

I had one of the XL models. It was awesome! I’d take naps in it up in the tree too. Ended up changing my hunting style because of going somewhere else with someone else and sold it to someone on Vancouver Island. It handles larger trees than most (maybe all others) and can handle a wide range of tree sizes.
But good luck getting one as they’ve shut down operations. They weren’t cheap and the exchange rate plus shipping was brutal. My brother has one he has used once and a friend used twice. I’ll ask if he would part with it as he mostly fishes now anyway

The advice Cat states above is key.

Would be great if some hurting Alberta fab shop picked up the business and started producing them locally...
