Random Thought
If you had to dispatch a deer with a knife (happens rarely for me) would it be illegal to tie that knife to a stick? it would be a spear at that point which would be handy the odd time but illegal to hunt with. Just wondering out loud.

What about defending yourself with a spear from a black bear during a valid season with a tag in your pocket? In the same circumstance with a shotgun I could legally harvest the animal. what about with a spear?

Over thinking the what if’s, is all you are doing.
I’ve finished a few deer off with a long bladed fillet knife through the sternum into the bottom of the lungs, I’ve also seen a fair number put down by the Sicilian neck tie method.
In all cases the deer was all but done for or severely paralyzed, and if it were more lively it would have taken a bullet.
The fixation with fringe issues and the like, makes a fellow go hmmm for sure.

"The fixation with fringe issues and the like, makes a fellow go hmmm for sure."
I'm not sure how to take this comment Dick.
The hunter's fixation or the goevernment's?
There is nothing 'fringe' about the law now.
Yes, finishing off big game with a knife, hand held or attached to a stick,
Is now Illegal.

I am fixated with legal issues as it can lead to life altering consequences. Asking questions about laws that affect you and me should be less fringe.

For the love of Pete, get it together.
Deer get their necks slit every day, it’s part of dispatching a critter.
Making a spear to do it, gimme a break, what’s the need? Some guys are so friggen scared of stuff, I wonder how they even get out of the door in the morning.
There isn’t a fish cop behind every tree, and I’m wonder why all the stealth about spear making, are you where you aren’t allowed.
Idle hands and over active imagination is all I see.

Just had a deer get up as I was approaching it and was wishing i had a little more distance is all. Which got me thinking maybe a short spear would be a handy addition as you could use it as a walking pole as well. Then I remembered the recent law passed making spears illegal. Which had me questioning the validity of the law as well as what constitutes a spear. The reply from WalkingBuffalo was the sort of info I was after. sorry for getting you all fired up Dick.

For cripes sakes shoot the deer again if it gets up as you approach it.
Your foil should be used for cooking, btw.

For me, the point is if there’s a law, there should be very specific verbiage around that law. Drives me crazy when there is ambiguity. That’s all. Probably fighting a lost cause but oh well.

Don’t worry about the spear. SPCA will charge you for causing unnecessary pain and suffering to the deer by letting it lay there while you take your time building your elaborate spear. And yes they are standing next to the F&W officer who hiding behind every tree.

Roger that. I have been kicked right in the jewels by a downed bull elk and participated in a rodeo when an apparently dead buck got up when we grabbed him by the antlers...so now I shoot a second shot into the upper neck if there is any sign of life at all when I approach. And I use premium bullets- still cheap. It's not worth getting gored for a couple dollars.

I know a hunter who tried a knife on an Elk,t stood up when he stabbed it. I am sure a deer could or may do the same. I have always shot them in the base of the neck,or if I wanted the cape through the lungs.

The Germans make, and still actually use a long sword for killing and bleeding game but it is in many ways predominantly ceremonial now. I can't imagine carrying one, or a spear on a regular basis hunting for the very rare occasion when an animal gets up close enough to you to use it. In all the game I have shot and been present when it was shot there are only a handful of times that the animal needed a kill shot when we walked up to it. You have a gun in your had already, why not just use that like everyone else does?

You already knew spear hunting is illegal, it is specifically forbidden, did you think that dispatching an animal would somehow change that? The old saying that there are no stupid questions has again been proven to be false.

Sure, but didn’t know that finishing them off with a knife would fall under the same law so learned something new. My goodness people here are hostile. Great way to keep a forum alive.

The issue here is that you are not listening.
As others rightfully said... shoot it again at the base of the neck.
Don't over analyze.
Have a great day.

Most big game rifle bullets (velocity) now a days impart enough damage that bleeding out a deer by slitting its throat is unnecessary .... but many still do out of habit or the belief that it help to stop blood clots in the meat. And I am sure any fish and wild life officer would never charge you for humanely dispatching a downed deer in the woods...with a knife.
Now if your intent is to hunt said animal with a stick and a knife... THAT would be a different case altogether.

I agree. Haven’t had much blood come out if it’s dead. But dispatching a surprising ammount. Funny definitions around hunting “harm, harass, injure” sure seems like dispatch would be included. Like you say though I couldn’t see ever being charged.

The ABA, specifically the president Brent Watson, conceived, officially proposed to the Ab Gov. and lobbied heavily to have spears and atlatls made illegal for hunting big game. He knew that due to the language required to make spears/atlatls illegal, using a hand held knife for a coup de grace would also be illegal.
This law is Brent's spawn.

Likely the only time ive dispatched an animal with a knife was a dusk shot on a deer
Ran into the bush. Lung shot but we all know they can still run
Waited an hour, walked in and it was dark. Found the deer. Walked up to it. It stayed laying but blinked so i used my knife
Cant shoot after dark so options are few
If it was light out, id just shoot it

Yep lol
Any time someone says we should slit its throat I go the other way and get a good view of the gong show that is about to happen
Know too many guys that have been gored and kicked and gouged
The key is to be smarter than the average Ukrainian lol
