Default Prairie Elk on Horseback

I finally have enough priority built up (13) for a prairie bull elk hunt. Im thinking it would be a super cool experience to do it on horseback maybe along the milk river somewhere like WMU 102. I know the bulls arent as big as they use to be, but a 300 incher would be awesome, I just think hunting the coulees and prairies on horseback would be such a cool trip. Has anyone done something like that for elk or even mule deer?

That would be cool especially with the Chuck Wagon to sleep in at night

I started a similar thread a few years ago as I've pretty much given up on a public land mountain horseback hunt for a high P elk tag. Looking forward to the responses.

I wouldn't waste my time in 102 I think there were only 3 bulls killed this year and not that big either. A p13 may not have got you a tag either! You'd have better luck in 108

I just came back from 102 deer hunt. We intended on taking horses to hunt on the ranches there but the weather screwed that up. Two much snow the first week and bad roads to haul a trailer on. We are looking at the same thing as well.
I will say, in two deer seasons of hunting we never saw a single elk. And most of the ranches we talked to had seen next to nothing this year. I am reconsidering whether I want to waste a 13 priority on that zone. I did hear there were some in the far eastern part.
Also, I need to clarify with AGL when and where horses are allowed on pinhorn GR.The permission letter I got spelled out no horses here and there before this date and after this date. Was a little confusing.
Local ranchers are great for access especially if you have horses. We had a lot of permission throughout the area.
You are not wrong though. It would be an awesome way to get back to the big bucks and out the same day.

That would be an exceptional hunt for sure. Wyoming horseback hunt as well.

If Chuck Wagons there I'm in.

I may have posted these before but my hunt in 102 was a great experience. I hunt that part of the province often and have come to know some great people down there. We got permission on both sides of the Milk River and had a lot of area to hunt. It’s hard for many people to wrap their head around the size of the ranches down there. We saw a small herd the night before from the North side of the river and found them the next day on the South side. With the river so low that time of the year, it is a fairly easy crossing if you find a good access point.

He was the second biggest bull I saw that day. The big one didn’t give me a chance to get off the horse and line up a shot. The one I did kill was bedded down and I shot him with a hand loaded Barnes TSX from a 30-06 before he knew I was there.

The coulees there are deep and I’m not sure what we would have done to retrieve this bull if we didn’t have the horses. It’s a long wait for a tag down there and even though he’s not the biggest bull, it was worth the effort. And as expected, there’s always the side stories that come when you use horses.
