Congrats on a great character buck. Very interesting back forks that you occasionally see on a WT

Ain't that the truth. I called my parents after shooting my first buck. Started tearing up knowing my dad was back in Ontario and couldn't be there with me.

Default Good times with my boy

Thanks to the grazing lease holder for permission for foot access. Ended up being a 1200m drag, up and down through a cooley, cross a small creek, fish deer out of said creek (lose heart in process), and load into truck. Wouldn't change it for the world!

The lucky hat strikes again.
Kid’s first season, Day two.
7mm-08 130 Speer spbt downloaded to about 2400 fps.
Heart - jelly
Half the lungs - jelly
Cue ball sized hole in the entrance ribs, Golf ball sized hole bored through the deer
Lost some shoulder meat too
Might have to rethink that bullet choice
She was thrilled, and I had the time of my life

To all successful hunters, young and old, boys and girls...great jobs!

That is what it is all about.

Leaving on the 11th myself, and looking forward to it! Will be chasing elk and whitetails...

First off, I've got to say that it's nice to see a wide range of sizes of animals on this thread. Also great to see some youngsters as well as some seasoned veterans. While it's fun to see pictures of the bruisers, I believe that most hunters harvest animals that are more modest in size. A legally harvested animal is worthy of celebration.

Shot this guy a couple of days ago. Nothing particularly exciting. Sitting on a stump, waiting for a deer to come by. A deer shows up and works his way through the bush, across the hillside. He stops to smell a branch and ........ bang.....flop. 235 ish metres. 130gr Partition from 270Win.

He's a small buck, but he'll be the right amount of deer meat for the two of us. And seeing as I was on my own, he was about as big as I'd want to pack out in one trip.
Other than the meat and the hind quarter with all the legal stuff, what you see here is what came home. A lot of unnecessary weight stays in the field when you do the gutless method.

The rack is getting sawed off and heading to the rafters in the garage. The tail is going to be used to make some jigs, streamers and flies.

Big Sky I am a firm believer in as long as the hunter tagging the animal is happy with his choice of animal is all that matters

At times I will hold out for something bigger but other times I just take what is legal for the freezer

Congrats to all who have tagged game so far and best of luck to those still trying

Default Sons first Deer

A couple of sundays ago my son and I were driving out to our spot we had decided to go to and we were running a little late as it was just about shooting light when we saw three deer right at the edge of the highway right where a gravel road turned off, so we decided to turn down .
We pulled just off the highway and part way up this road and there was a small cutblock so we stopped and glassed it for awhile as it became light.

I thought we’re here now, might as well check this road out and see where it goes,we drove up the road about 4 kms and just as it opened up on the power line cut block I looked up to the right and saw what I at first thought was a doe.
I told my son to get out quietly load up your rifle and take a rest at a tree as we were right at the edge of the timber.
I just sat in the truck heart racing trying to glass the deer while he shot...Boom!
Looked like a good shot!
I pulled the truck off the road, we geared up and hiked up, and found the little Spike buck laying there, he didn’t make it 20 feet.
I dressed it and tied a rope to him and said here you go and my son dragged him down and back to the truck!
Super proud Dad moment to say the least! Only problem now is my son thinks the only way to hunt is from the nice heated cab of the truck.... Lol so I have since made him do lots of hiking!!

PS. Still trying to figure out posting pictures! As soon as I do I will get some up here

My kids and I had a fun trip last week and filled our freezer. My daughter filled her antlerless tag and I got my first whitetail buck while having my boys along with me. They were very excited! It was my daughter's second year with a tag and she's now killed 2 deer with 2 bullets and really knows what she's doing while hunting. It's a lot of fun letting her lead the way and watching her succeed. Made me overwhelmingly proud!

The story and video of our hunt is on our YouTube channel if interested...
