This is good advice. Have used this twice in desperate circumstances to get my wife treatment in Calgary. Hopefully the same where you live.
They do a phone assessment and if you meet the criteria they will absolutely fast track you to where you need to be.
Praying for legions of angels to surround and protect her.

My Dad had lung cancer and they took out 1 of three lobes on his lung. A healthy person can get by on one lung. He was not healthy due to smoking and welding as a career.

June 27th is to long for getting in for tests. You did not mention which hospital emergency you went to. I have heard good things about Red Deer from two friends that were treated there. The Walter C in Edmonton has direct connections to the Cross (mu sister went this route). Foothills in Calgary. Pick a hospital connected to a cancer centre and head into the emergency. Typically emergency wards fill up during the day so if you can get in very early (around 5 am) just before shift changes you can get in quick and new staff come on shift for 7 to 8.

Try the health link -- some of the people that answer are not good. If you get one of those hang up and call back a little later. There are some good folks on the health link you just have to get to them.

Good luck and the best thoughts from our family are with you. Lung cancer treatments have come a long ways in the last 10 years so do not give up hope. Just get in and you may have to push to get help.

No update in five days from the last post by Bloopbloob does not bode well with me.. I hope and pray that he got her in and that there is a remedy available for her.

Sorry. Just no news to report. Still waiting. I really wish I could post a great picture I have of her fishing. Just to put a face to this nasty disease. Don't know how, now that photobucket is gone. She is so gorgeous and still so young. Came out of nowhere. Cherish what you have while you have it!

Sorry to all I have not replied to directly, just don't have time for all that, but all prayers and advice and recommendations have been read and very much appreciated, so thank you all.

Sorry to hear Bloopbloob. For a recommendation, I'd go see your wife's physician to see if she would be a candidate for home oxygen. If she's short of breath, she'll be fatigued and have no energy due to a build up of CO2 in her blood. The oxygen should help with that, and will help her make it through until she can have the procedure done on the 27th.

Ill keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers, and hope the biopsy comes back benign or treatable.

Thank you. This was taken last summer. Just want people to see how healthy and beautiful someone can be, and how indiscriminate and vile this disease can be. Came out of the blue. Was not expecting this at all. Two weeks before we were discussing having one more child. Cherish your loved ones!!!!

Talk to your doctor and the cancer team about oxygen.I have an excellent respiratory specialist in Calgary. P.M. me if you want a contact number.

Hang in there.

Any change in symptoms, especially with breathing, call 911. Here in Calgary, you have to be persistent with the system. Not aggressive, but persistent. The health care folks are overrun and spread thin for many reasons.

Just seeing this thread now. Hoping for a positive outcome!

You hit the nail on the head. Firmly persistent sums it up, and unfortunately it really does make a difference what hospital you go to.
If her shortness of breath or chest pain has worsened take her into ER. In Calgary I would go to the Foothills but I assume the U of A would be your best best.
Make sure the triage nurses know she is in for "shortness of breath" and "chest pain", that will get her into a stretcher ASAP.
It sounds like her next step is a brochoscopy and frequently if someone is in house they can get added on to the list very quickly (you would be surprised how many don't bother to show up for their tests).
Good luck to your wife but keep in mind there are many things on x ray that mimic lung CA so it's not necessarily cancer.

The oxygen is a great idea, but, if her lungs are filling with fluid, oxygen will not be very effective. She most likely will be in need of suction. Having her lie with her feet elevated-head down and spitting phlegm as it accumulates will increase time. And when she gets to the hospital and lung suctioning is started, get yourself involved. In other words, learn how to do it. Sometimes the health practitioners are too busy with other patients to be timely with the others and this is where you come in. You do it when others are not available for whatever reason. Your wife has good chances surviving lung cancer, 55% if detected in early stages. Her's appears to be aggressive so that percentage may be lower, however, she is young and was quite healthy until recently so her odds are still good.
You see you and she have a lot of people from this forum and no doubt other places too praying for her well being and recovery. And we will continue to do that. But I truly believe that she has to personally ask GOD to grant her a cure. She needs you do do the same.

After spending the last 16years working in the Alberta Health Care system I wish I could tell you some magic hand shake exists to speed this process up but it does not sadly. Biggest things I can suggest are pay close attention to her symtoms, keep a journal so you can refer back easily, start researching lung cancer now so you know what questions you want answered and ignore the statistics they dont help and are probably american anyway. Biggest thing if she gets sicker or starts having more problems then you can handle call 911, go to emerge, go to a walkin clinic dont wait your not a pain and mentally your hiking everest right now make sure you keep your head straight, its ok to be upset.

Im sure you have everyone on here keeping you in their thoughts/prayers. I know you have mine. Good luck.

*edit* please dont listen to people telling you to lie her down with her feet up and her head down. If she is ever unusually short of breath. Seek immediate medical help sit her up high and leaning forward will help her lungs expand the best. Oxygen will take you a while to get even with a Drs order.

I agree with this, tripod position is essential if she's severely short of breath. She'll most likely put herself in that position anyways, but would hate for someone to read the above and put a person with respiratory distress upside down. I wouldn't be lying upside down unless told by your doctor.

If she's having troubles sleeping, she can try sleeping sitting up.(A good lazy boy is what a lot of people use) It should help with any fluid in her chest as the fluid settles to the bottom of the lungs instead of spreading over the entire lung. It allows for better gas exchange. If she has a lot of fluid on her lung and her kidney's are still good. She can be put on Lasix to help drain the excess fluid, in advanced stages is where you'd be suctioning, installing drains, and flipping people upside down to remove the consolidation. The biggest thing is find a good family doctor who you are both comfortable with as they are an invaluable resource and will help you going forward.

I don't know where a couple of you folks came up with the notion that it was suggested that the young lady should be totally inverted. The words were,
"Having her lie with her feet elevated-head down and spitting phlegm as it accumulates will increase time."
As a person with COPD, I know what it is like to run out of breath. Do you? "The biggest thing is find a good family doctor who you are both comfortable with as they are an invaluable resource and will help you going forward." is the most inane statement yet. The biggest thing is get her in the hospital! Her condition is far beyond the care of a GP/family doctor.
She should be immediately admitted to a hospital respirology ward and tests conducted expediently to determine what is ailing her right now.
Bloopbloob, several days have once again passed and I pray that your absence is an indication that your wife has been admitted to the hospital and she is recovering from some malady other than cancer.
