Default new cameras??

Looking at buying a camera for taking pictures while hunting and fishing. Has to be simple to operate and would like a lot of zoom. What should a guy be looking at getting.

I just purchased a Canon SX50HS on sale recently, and it seems to take decent pictures. It has a 50x optical zoom, and it cost me $360.

What elk said, Canon SX50.
Also, Nikon Coolpix P520 and Sony HX300.
The 50x zoom on these cameras are great for taking hiking or hunting pics, all sub $400 too.

It really depends a lot on your 'photo quality' tolerance. If you're not concerned with pixelation in the photo details and you just want to take casual 'snaps', go with one of the cameras already mentioned.

Also, in the same catagory (Super-Zooms), but with a little better photo quality, you might want to consider the Panasonic(Lumix) DMC-FZ200 as well.

Pro tip: bring your phone into whatever store you are going to buy your camera from and search for the specific camera on Amazon in front of the sales person. The big box stores will.price match plus 10% often. I saved $465 on my wifes Canon Rebel T3 that way. Thats more than %50 off.

Also, her camera seems pretty good. Easy enough for this gorilla to use . Needed another zoom lens though to complete the package.

Default Portable camera

Newer camera phones do a great job, in the right conditions, with digital zoom. They are the most portable.

Modern range finders are great, simple to use, and much less expensive than full sized DSLR's. All have more pixels than needed. Watch those who advertise digital zoom, as that is simply cropping the image. Optical Zoom is real zoom.

Most brands have new mini DSLR's that, with a small lens are not much larger than a rangefinder, however, it you want more zoom you need money for an awkward , but effective lens. I spend near $1500 for a Sony NEX 5N with a big zoom a few years ago.

Hey I would recommend a DSLR , Canons rebel t2i, t3i are affordable and
use the the same sensor as the more expensive DSLRs it has all the easy full auto mode it comes with a 18-55mm lens which dosnt have much zoom but buy 18-200mm lens a good tripod and your set.. I ran into this buck Saturday morning while i was shed hunting, and got these pics with my rebel t21 18-200mm lens. I have trial cam pics of him from may untill 3 weeks before bow season opened after I repoitioned the trail cam i found him but was only getting pics at night,, never havested him, good to see he made the season hope he makes it through this harsh winter,,

Like most here, I got the sense from the OP's post ^ that he's looking for a fixed lens, Super-Zoom camera (eg. 24mm-1200mm lens).

Maybe the OP could clarifly what type of camera he's looking for.

A couple years back I picked up a Canon SX30IS 35x Optical Zoom, (An earlier version of the SX50HS) it was a great camera, I could not belive the zoom I could take pictures of craters on the moon, And now for certain reasons I needed to purchase a new camera so after a little research I went with the Canon SX50HS got lucky and picked it up at Future shop boxing week on sale for $299.99. Haven't used it to much yet but will very soon.

Here's a couple pics with the SX30IS

The picture with the fishing boat was a tiny black dot with the naked eye. Not sure how far out they were but it was far.
Had to reduce the pixels to upload them
