Default Caliber remarking

Changed caliber in a rifle, looking to remark barrel- engrave, stamp, laser. In the Edmonton-Hinton area.

Just to tie off this thread. Ended up using FineLine in Edmonton. Job was OK- not happy with the attempted overcharge of $250 for "0.17 Mach II", he dropped to $150 without much argument. I would look elsewhere- but this is machined in, a guy on Leduc lasers in- which does not go as deep. I remarked directly over old caliber markings.

Thanks for the update. Even at $150, seems pretty expensive but even with small jobs there is setup time etc so $100 minimum if probably realistic.

I had the work done at a cost I could bear. And because of the Alberta gouge- most of my work goes to excellent smiths in BC or Ontario.

Inflation is used as an excuse to raise prices.

It seems to work as an excuse whenever someone asks for a raise in pay.

Exactly. Everyone accepts when a dealership raises its labour rates, or a pack of steaks goes up, but Gunsmiths should be charging 1950 rates for a shop full of heavy machinery and stock on the shelves. Then people wonder where they went. I remember a certain Gunsmith discussing the industry and he nailed it, “Consumers treat Firearms repair and build shops like they are hobbies because every 3rd guy in Alberta owns a lathe and knows everything.”

Sorry, I must have misunderstood. I was under the impression that it was a jewelry shop that did this and that they did a mediocre job for $100 more than agreed upon?

You would be correct.

In a response to others, I had a gun built years ago in Ladner BC, found out later the fellow wasn't a licensed gunsmith- did a nice job but never understood why not for liabilities sake, would I knowing use a guy like that again- probably not. There are a few others like Jason at Gunco that if it makes sense to ship out- I will, he does an excellent job, charges reasonable rates and isn't a prima donna- what more could I ask for....btw he's in Ontario. My dollars aren't captive to Alberta and I reserve the right to stretch them as I see fit.
