Default Smoker tube

Has any one had experience with smoker tubes?

Having a hard time justifying a stand alone smoker.

Look up smoke generator on YouTube.
You’ll need an electric air pump and some various parts. Mine kicks out gobs of smoke if I want it to. Then attach to your bbq and you got a smoker!

Smoker tubes work best in a BBQ for indirect cooking, if there is even low heat under the tube eventually it will reach ignition temperature and start on fire.
Putting the tube on the warmer rack helps although hitting 400* in a BBQ can happen quick resulting in flames.

Cooking this turkey the right burner was off

I have a few of the tubes and a large racetrack style smoke generator.
They work well for supplementing smoke in a smoker or adding flavor when using a gas bbq/grilll. They are great for cold smoking cheese in the winter months.

I’d recommend buying one and trying it out, the tubes are inexpensive.

Eventually you will end up buying a smoker anyway, the tube is a gateway drug.

Tubes can be a bit of pita to get going and keep going. I fill the tube with pellets and use a propane torch to get them burning well, let them burn for 5-10 minutes establishing a coal bed, then snuff the fire and let it smolder/smoke away.

WOW bat119, does that ever look GREAT AND DELICIOUS!

I will have to get one and give it a try, I used to have a Bradley Smoker, but them pucks are very expensive and the last turkey I did in it cost me $20.00 in wood pucks, I sold it! Did a great job on jerky though.

How much smoke flavor did you get doing it that way? Isn't it interesting how smoked turkey legs tastes like the best ham you ever had, and the smoked turkey soup is a WINNER!

The turkey took about 3 1/2 hours to cook at 325* the smoke was able to penetrate deep, used 75% maple 25% mesquite pellets

If you want a real ham flavour brine the turkey it turns out perfect

Could not agree more bat119, I use Mortons Tender Quick with Turkey, I inject it. One of my favorite smoked roasts to make is a Standing Rib Roast of Pork, rib in.

A friend made some smoked ribs the other week, he used Costco's Gourmet Blend wood pellets, really inexpensive and good. I will be ordering a tube today and buying some of those pellets.

Thanks for the info!

A-MAZE-N Pellet Smoker works great if you can find them but can be a little finicky when its humid in the smoker.
https://www.amazon.ca/A-MAZE-N-AMNPS.../dp/B007ROPJ1M
The A-MAZE-N oval tube is my favorite, once its lit it says going until your out of pellets. Its the one shown in this kit.
https://www.amazon.ca/MAZE-N-Smoke-C...8285565&sr=8-2

Either one of those products produces such a perfect thin blue smoke that I prefer to use them instead of the smoke generators that came installed in my smoker. It also provides a much more even heat than smoke produced by a hot electric element.

Mindoutside, I've got one you can have.... I've given up using it since I've got my smoker. I live in the NW, work in the core. PM me if you want it.

Smoke tubes work to infuse smoke flavor but they do not replace a smoker.
Just depends on what your intentions are.

Those dollar store floating candles work well to get things like that started as well.

I just looked back through my Amazon history, I bought the maze for $34 and the tube for $28. As far as Im concerned they are worth every penny. With Covid though prices on Amazon have soared. It might be worth checking out the BBQ places like the one on 75th and Roper Road as they might carry the A-maze-n brand.

Could someone explain to me the difference between the smoke tube and wrapping some wood chips in aluminum foil?

Smoke tube can be used for cold smoking. The chips wrapped in foil I've only ever seen used for hot smoking.

A smoke tube is filled with pellets, lit on fire from one end for a few minutes, blown out then allowed to smoulder. The coals slowly move across the tube for a long period of time, say 6 to 8 hours for a 12" tube. A thin blue smoke is produced that is much more manageable. This allows you to cold smoke or hot smoke but using a different heat source. Filling a tube with chips will not allow the chips to smoke, it either smothers itself or it auto ignites.

Chips wrapped in tin foil will only smoulder if the heat is high enough. Once smouldering it burns hotter as well. It is also much harder to control the heat because you must find the balance point between smouldering and auto ignition temperature. This method heats all the chips at once and produces a much thicker more intense smoke that is also likely to produce creosote, which gives the meat a bitter flavour.

Either method has the potential to auto ignite so you must be careful. especially in a bbq where there is much more airflow than a smoking cabinet.
