Small engine or motor sports shop?
Morning all. I’m looking for recommendations or even just advice on having some cylinder work done on a sled I have. Former owner had it bored .020 over, and best I can tell installed the right pistons, but standard bore rings on them, amd they damaged the cylinder walls a little. Logically next step is to go .040 over and replace the pistons and rings, but tbh my experience is limited to only ever doing new top end kits on bikes, and have never had to have anything bored. Suggestions? Located in High River Ab

Getting them bored is no big deal, what you want to check is can you get the right pistons and rings for the overbore you want to do. I do not know a lot about sleds but I know on many 2 stroke Bikes you only had certain choices in pistons and rings, so for instance the next available matched set may well be .08. Depending on overbore may need just jets, but may need carb, reeds etc. too. I would phone your local sled dealer and find out what is available. Might be cheaper just to buy new pots and go back to stock.

Can you tell us what brand and model of sled you are talking about?
Often it is a case that the aftermarket piston sets are not great quality, and the severe overbore causes cylinder cracks down the road. You should be able to go .40, but maybe the piston scuff is more than .40 to cut out, and then you buy the new Cylinder anyways.
I had a quad where a significant cylinder bore was done, and sure enough it cracked a few weeks after going back into service. The R & R was expensive.

The sled is a 94 summit 583.

Generally, you buy a top end kit, that includes pistons and rings. Depending on the exact model, some are available up to 2mm oversize.

Thanks for the feedback so far. .040 piston kits are readily available for this sled, as well as top end gasket sets. I’m more looking for a referral or recommendation for a shop to do the machining for me.

Never had any of that kind of work done when I was living in Calgary so can't really help. Most of the shops send that kind of stuff out to be done, few do it in house. I might try asking a couple of the local Calgary bike/sled places who does their cylinder work for them. Worse comes to worse, Motts Machining in Edmonton does very good work.

If you're in High River, contact the guys at Brewster industries in Turner Valley. They have a very capable journeyman machinist on staff.
