What would you do
What if Government banned free hanger snares for coyotes , Would you invest in Power snares ? or give up considering the cost of these devices versus the likely hood the price may not hold .
would you go to footholds? price is much the same as power device.

I don't think I'd tell the enemy on a forum what my plan would be.

Yes That is all I was bringing this topic up for so no conspiracy intended! an assumption was all .
On the other hand take a look at the Red Deer advocate the article written by Marry Ann Barr on the thoughts of Mr Dwight Rhodka of Rocky Mountain house !With that sort of back talking to put it mildly who needs enemies and I really question the Officer qualifications , does anyone know to the opposite? For an individual that professes to have made a living or vocation for that matter and is now retired you have to question where this is going ? sounds like sour grapes to be honest . Make a point of checking this out fellows ! its really something we should be not taking lightly !
This is ONE individuals personal opinion for all the ignorant world to see and as such his qualifications are surely questionable!!
Although it is a free country should someone be allowed to spout nonsense such as this 200 snares per bait pile????

I had a friend call me the other day, he said his neighbors dog was missing for a few days. They found the dog in a free hanging snare, not on their land, still alive but had to put it down. If it were a ram it would have been dead with in minutes..So I am not sure which side I am on. If they found the dog sooner it might have been ok..but definitely not with a ram. I know the dog should be in it's yard so don't want to debate that, just unfortunate for all trappers. I know the owners of the dog will never allow anyone to trap on there land and they have a lot.

"The moon... is over... the goose...at high noon..." (trappers code)
If free hanging snares were shut down... in some areas soft catch/offset legholds are better used than power snares. A wandering farm dog is spared and can be released easier. You might have to change the dogs name to "Tripod" but he will still be around.
A leghold is more versatile too.

It doesn't matter to the anti's if they shut down a tool (snare) we use, they will keep moving to next one and try to have it outlawed, stand up to them now and stick together.

The article, discussed incidental catches in snares set for wolves. The picture with the editorial was that of a golden eagle, one of two caught in the snares. One of the eagles has died, not sure of the condition of the other. What concerned me was the number of reported incidental cougar catches (15). Not the subject animal the sanres were set for.

Cougar numbers... What an interesting other topic! The cougar population is managed in such a manner, both Canada/USA that it spikes to an astronomically high number which BTW is never good management to have a top of the food chain predator allowed to mass proliferate. The over populated, over capacity cats spread across Alberta and continue their spread east into Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and continue pushing east. Mind blowing! Then it's the trappers fault that a few cats get captured? Could be worse, but many trappers are already doing the right thing and running breakaway devices on their snares, and many Cougars that do get hooked blow the breakaway out and continue in unharmed. But the game manager never knows or hears of the countless breakaway successes.
Harvest the excess, let's manage the resource properly. That which is harvested should not be wasted. Taxidermists would like the work.

It's better than the piles of cougars that are also on the SSS list! Why waste them if there is no need to.

Hate to say it this way, but the government has always been handed money. They have no idea how to make it, let alone use this resource that trappers provide to better there program or the ability of so so conservation efforts to improve the situation.

I've seen the mass storage of these animals first hand, waiting for there turn to have a tooth removed, a stomach dissected and then finally burned. They wait in a freezer for there turn to be completely destroyed.

Should be selling them and putting the money back into sheep habitat or projects to kill wolves

Dan I've said lots on Rodtka's qualifications and other issues with him on this Forum. The problem with someone rebutting the misinformation he spouts to the media (who eat it up) is the media don't want to hear the truth. They just want sensationalism and emotion, and that's what he delivers.
I'm going to say it again on here. Rodtka is trying to get snare and quite possibly all killing devices mandatory 48 hour checks for RFMA's and 24 hour for Resident. This will eliminate most trappers in my opinion as I don't know too many trappers that can dedicate that kind of time exclusively.
This is something that the ATA should be working hard to get the clear picture out. Maybe they are. I would sure hope so. A big part of the future of trapping is being jeopardized by a guy that will stop at nothing and say whatever it takes to harm the trapping industry.
Just because he was mad about not receiving the incentive money for a couple of wolves that didn't qualify.

Is there any numbers available stating how many ungulates are allowed to live every year on account of trapping and snaring keeping the coyote (predators) numbers in check. In the area here where I trap there is correlation between ungulate populations and fur prices, so for me it's easy to see trapping as a effective and humane of method controlling predators, but like it was just mentioned previously the media isn't interested on the complete story.

From the stuff I hear of people that know this individual , there has to be a reason why one would be so malevolent towards the trappers ?
What exactly fuels a persons drive to say stuff like this ?
Did one for certain have the designation of Officer?
Or Predator control specialist?
or are these self given titles because of the work one does ?
from local legend it sounds like methods of operation were purported to be questionable ?
Everyone has skeletons . Perhaps as one ages we try to clean the closet so to speak.

After talking to the Cow Lake area Local people he is a self proclaimed "officer". He snared coyotes in the area but as a resident trapper, nothing to do with Fish and Wildlife. He trapped problem beavers for Clearwater County and apparently wasn't a real ball of fire.
He trapped with his Dad Carl and his Brother Dwayne a bit but apparently Carl was the knowledge and ambition.
That's what I was told from people who have known him and his family for many years.
As for the motivation to destroy the trapping industry and credibility I don't know. Maybe he will come back on here to gather more pictures and information and enlighten us.

My buddy
Also know as Rabbit Snarer and a host of other short lived titles.
I suspect he was picked on quite often as a child, or some other situation that has left him jaded with the world
