Default Owning a bow

So I will keep this question short and sweet. I am new to Canada after moving here from the UK.

I have a very simply and quick question i hope you guys can answer.

What license do you need to own a compound bow? If you dont need one at all, can I assume I can simply walk into an archery store and buy one? I am looking to do target archery not hunting, so I know I wont need a hunting license, what I am not sure of is if i need a license to own and operate one, like you do a rifle!

Thanks everyone.

Default bow

No license required to simply own/buy a bow. Have fun.

that is the wonderful thing about archery, no fees or licensing required, outside of the initial purchase... at least not yet anyway

Side questions:

1) Im in Edmonton, never held or fired a bow in my life. Is there anywhere i can go to learn how to use, fire, maintain, types of arrow to use etc etc? like a beginners archery school?

2) (i know stupid question) Do you have to have a cabinet you have to house your bow in, like again you do with rifles?

I would try Trophy book archery or Sherwood Park archery about learning the sport.

There are no restrictions on storing a bow.

Welcome to Alberta and Canada, enjoy the archery...

As mentioned there are no restrictions on storage or carry...however most carry their bows in bow cases while transporting , not only does it make a bow appear non threatning in public...it protects the bow and strings...

I have been to rehab, therapy and meetings and every time I encounter my old dealer, not naming names but it rhymes with Wete Pard, I end up with a grand or so less in the bank and a family threatening to leave me.

Mika,

Your question has raised my curiosity - do you need a license for a bow in the UK? I remember reading somewhere that handguns and knives over a couple of inches were banned, what about pointy sticks?

I would double check that for cross bows. I know that in Alberta unless otherwise disabled to draw a regular compound bow a cross bow is classified as a rifle and can not be used in bow zones around Edmonton and Calgary.

Anyone can own and use a crossbow in AB. One cannot however use a crossbow in the archery only season unless they are disabled and have a license to use a crossbow in the archery only season. A good opportunity for anyone to use a crossbow is in the spring bear season. This has nothing to do with "bow zones", it is applicable to all WMU's that have archery seasons.
