Default Proud of my son!!

Monday was the opening day for rifle elk in the zone that we hunt and my son and I were hunting on a friend's oat field that the elk had been trashing all fall...it is a wide open field with a 1/4 of solid bush adjacent to it that has been posted no hunting or tresspassing for as long as I can remember.

So here we are sitting in our ground blinds and it is coming to last light..'bout 15 minutes left and the herd starts coming over the fence to feed on the leftover silage...we can only shoot 3 points or better...no cow tag this year!! My son counted 40 cows, calves, spikes and 2 pointers that came over the fence about 50 yds in to the field. The herd bull, a big 6 x 6 stood on the other side of the fence at the wire and would not cross even though the rest of the herd was feeding already....he watched them until it got too dark and I came to pick him up. I guess he has learned something over the years hunting with the old man...he passed on him even though that was the only legal animal!!The farmer said he should have shot him and drug him under the fence...I diplomatically told him that we enjoyed hunting too much to risk something like that and I know some guys would of!!

I couldn't have been prouder of him!!

That way of thinking will pay off in spades. Good ethics from you and your son.

Good for him! It's just opening day anyways, there will
be ample opprotunity for the both of you yet. There's likely some
good parenting to blame for this

x2. Good to see some youth of today being brought up the right way. Too many entitled kids around that would have taken the shot and worried about the problems later. Life is all about choices and consequences. Your son chose.....wisely

You've taught him well. He isn't one of those "other guys" - he's grown up to be an ambassador for our sport where how you hunt is more important than what you shoot.

Pass on our cudos to him for embracing the higher standard.

Thats a great story. You are right to be proud of him. Hopefully we will see another story soon of that big bull crossing the fence for him, and see some pics of with your son holding onto his rack when he gets him

Good on both of you! With those hunting ethics, you will have many years ahead of you with great memories. Congrats and good luck in closing the deal together.......Marco
